Canada undefeated in round robin play with win over Japan 5-2.

It was a storybook evening at the 14th Canada Cup softball tournament
in White Rock/Surrey. Team Canada (currently ranked 5th in the
World) was up against the Japanese National Team (currently ranked
2nd in the World), on a beautiful summer evening. The winner
of the game would remain undefeated in pool play and take first
place in the red pool going into playoffs. 

After giving up two runs in the top of the 1st inning in front
of a spirited crowd, Team Canada threatened to tie things up
in the bottom of the frame and was successful in pushing one
run across. Both teams continued to place runners on base and
then in the fourth inning with two runners aboard, Tamra Howren
from White Rock/Surrey, hit a powerful homerun to straight away
centerfield scoring three runs with the blast. Following the
homerun, Melanie Matthews tripled to right field and then later
scored on a pass ball. Canada scored a total of four runs in
the frame to take a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. 

Japan was kept off balance with a strong performance from winning
pitcher Robin Mackin. Mackin (Newmarket, Ontario), pitched 7
innings, giving up just four hits while striking out 5. 

Heading into the playoffs on Friday, Team Canada with a record
of 5-0 will take on Chinese Taipei who finished fourth in the
white pool at 3:30 pm. This game will be played on Diamond one
at Softball City in White Rock/Surrey. Additional information
