Aussie pitching for a win

Australia will meet Venezuela in their final hopes of remaining
in the 2007 Canada Cup after going down to Japan 8-3 in this
morning’s game.

The Japanese got off to an early five run lead with Australian
batters closing the gap at the bottom of the third innings to
just two runs.

Tracey Mosley was hit by a pitch from the arm of Japan’s Naho
Emoto and Kate Judd came in as her pinch runner. Judd was moved
around the bases by her team mates to score Australia’s first
run.

With bases loaded, Danica Howlett hit a double to centre field
and scored Sandra Allen and Natalie Ward to end the dig for Australia
and to take the score to 5-3.

Australia had their chances in the bottom of the fourth innings
with runners on base, but was unable to reduce Japan’s four run
lead.

Zara Mee started on the pitching mound for Australia, giving
up three runs and was relieved during the second innings by Catherine
Bishop.

Bishop took to the mound for 1.2 innings and was unable to hold
the Japanese batters conceding five hits, four runs with one
strike-out.

Felicity Witt pitched the remaining three innings (3.2) of play,
giving up only one run.

Australia plays Venezuela on Sunday at 1.00am (AEST) to keep
their final’s hopes alive, with the winner going on to play either
Japan or USA and the loser exiting the tournament.
