Canada keeps bats alive in win over Chinese Taipei

(Surrey, BC) – Team Canada’s bats came alive once again at
the Canada Cup as they defeated Chinese Taipei 12-2 in their
first playoff game this afternoon. The win was even more impressive
for the Canadians considering Chinese Taipei qualified for the
2008 Olympics in Beijing China after winning the Asia/Oceania
Olympic qualifying tournament last month, going 10-0 for the
event.

However, on this night, Team Canada jumped to an early lead and
added eight runs in the fourth inning to take control of the
game. Canada opened the scoring in the top of the first inning,
when Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) and Jennifer Salling (Port
Coquitlam, BC) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the game.
After the two next batters were retired, Noemie Marin (Acton-Vale,
QC) delivered an RBI single to score Matthews, and Salling scored
on a fielding error.

Chinese Taipei was able to cut the two-run lead in half with
a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning. However,
Canada put the game away in the top of the fourth inning. The
big inning began when the Canadians loaded the bases with no
outs. Janiva Willis (Irishtown, NB) pushed one run home with
a sacrifice fly to right field, before Danielle Lawrie (Langley,
BC) and Matthews hit back-to-back doubles to score three more
runs. Salling then delivered a single, and Matthews crossed the
plate on another error. After a single by Sheena Lawrick (Calgary,
AB), the Taipei pitcher was pulled, but the move did not pay
off as Tamra Howren (White Rock, BC) delivered a double to bring
two more runs home. Howren later scored on an RBI single by Megan
MacKenzie (North Delta, BC) to push the score to 10-1 for Canada.

Chinese Taipei responded with a two-out single to score a run
in the bottom of the inning, but that was all they could muster
the rest of the way. Canada added two more runs in their half
of the fifth when Rachel Schill (Kitchener, ON) scored on an
RBI single by Salling and Erin Gee scored on Chinese Taipei’s
sixth error of the game.

Canadian pitcher Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK) threw all five innings
for the red and white, surrendering two runs on six hits while
striking out four Taipei batters.

Salling led Canada at the plate with three singles, and Matthews
added a double and a single. The Canadians also made good use
of their speed on the base paths, swiping four bases and taking
the extra base whenever possible to force six Taipei errors.

Canada takes on Japan Elite later tonight (8:30pm, PT) as the
playoff round continues at Softball City in Surrey, BC.
