For Immediate Release:

Playoffs begin with a win for Team Canada.

Friday marks the start of the playoff round at the Canada Cup
International Softball tournament. The top four teams from each
pool continue play in a double knock out format. Team Canada
played Chinese Taipei in their first game of the day winning
in five innings 12-2. Noemie Marin went 2 for 2 and was joined
in the multi hit department by Melanie Matthews with 2 hits and
Jen Salling with three hits. Winning pitcher Dione Meier went
the distance on the mound for Team Canada.

Team Canada placed three players on the Canada Cup Round Robin
All-Star team. Outfielder Melanie Matthews, First Base Sheena
Lawrick and Designated Player Tamra Howren all received honours.

In the nightcap, Team Canada’s second game of the day, the team
was up against a spirited Japan Elite team. This was a great
game scoreless for 5 ½ innings before Japan Elite took advantage
of a couple of miscues by the Canadian defense, strung a couple
of hits together and scored three runs. Final score for the finale
was 3-0 in favour of Japan Elite. Danielle Lawrie took the loss
for the Canadian side giving up just three hits in her 5.2 innings
pitched while striking out six. “Danielle pitched a great game”
says Lori Sippel, Head coach for the Canadian side. “I really
believe that this loss has created a great opportunity for this
team to get better than any of the previous wins. We are really
looking forward to getting back on the field for another day
of competition.”

Next up for the Canadians at 3:30pm on Saturday is the winner
of Chinese Taipei and Japan Denso. All games will be played at
Softball City in White Rock/Surrey, British Columbia. For detailed
