(Surrey,BC) The Canadian Senior Womens National Teams medal
hopescame to an end last night, as they fell to Japan 4-3. Canada
held a 3-0 leadgoing into the bottom of the sixth inning, but
Japan chipped away with one runin the inning and scored three
more in the bottom of the seventh to endCanadas tournament.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Canadians asthey had rolled
over most of their opponents throughout the tournament.
Canadascored the first run of the game in the top of the third
inning, as they loadedthe bases with no outs and Noemie Marin
(Acton-Vale, QC) scored from third on awild pitch. However, that
was all the Canadians could get in the inning. In thetop of the
sixth, Rachell Schill (Kitchener, ON) delivered an RBI single
toscore Janiva Willis (Irishtown, NB) from third. With runners
on second andthird with no outs, the Japanese pitcher was able
to strike out two Canadianbatters before Melanie Matthews (Surrey,
BC) hit an RBI single of her own toplate Canadas third run of
the game.
Afterstarting pitcher Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) made quick
work of the Japanesehitters through the first five innings, Japan
wasted no time scoring in theirhalf of the sixth. Lawrie walked
the leadoff hitter and the next batterdelivered a double to bring
the runner from first in to score. After giving upa single, Robin
Mackin came in to pitch for Canada, and was able to escape theinning
with only one run scored. However, in the bottom of the seventh
inning,Japan got their two first hitters on base, and with one
out, Masumi Mishinadelivered an RBI single followed by an RBI
double by Emi Nato. After Canadaloaded the bases intentionally,
a catchers obstruction call by the homeplate umpire awarded
the Japanese hitter first base, bringing home the winningrun.
Matthewshad three hits for Canada, Gee and Schill each added
two singles, while Marinand Jennifer Salling each contributed
a single of their own.
Lawriepitched five innings, giving up only one run on five hits
while only walkingone batter and striking out seven. Robin Mackin
took the loss, allowing threeruns on three hits and two walks,
striking out three in one inning and a third.

fourth place finishat the Canada Cup, but they will have a chance
to redeem themselves nextweekend when they participate in the
