Australia out of Canada Cup

 

The Australian Open Women’s team, Aussie Spirit, has bowed out
of the 14th Canada Cup today after going down to Japan 7-0.

Australian bats were firing earlier in the day against Venezuela
scoring a massive 11-2, but had no answers to the Japanese. 


Head Coach Fabian Barlow was disappointed with his team’s performance
throughout the tournament. 

“The team had under preformed throughout the tournament in all
facets of the game.  A handful of players made the most of their
opportunities during this tournament, however there is lots of
work to be done when players return to their training programs
in their individual States.”

 

Aussie Spirit batters conceded four hits from Japan’s pitcher
Mishina Masubuchi, but were unable to convert their base runners
to score. 



Japan got the lead early in the game scoring two runs in the
second innings and maintained their lead throughout the five
innings game. 



Three of Australia’s pitchers, Felicity Witt, Zara Mee and Jocelyn
McCallum, tried to stop the Japanese batters giving up nine hits,
seven runs and two strike-outs. 



It is the first time in two years Australia has not made it to
the gold medal match, with Japan, USA, Canada and Japan Elite
still in medal contention. 

 

The gold medal match being played on Monday at 11.30am (AEST).
