PanAm Games: Canadas Softball Team Opens with win over Argentina
(Cityof Rock, Brazil) After another delay caused by poor field
conditionsearlier in the day, the Canadian Womens Softball was
finally able to geton the field and open their Pan American Games
schedule last night, defeatingArgentina by a 5-2 score. Both
teams were fired up to start the game and thiscertainly showed
as they both got off to an early start on the scoreboard.
Inthe top of the first inning, Argentina took advantage of having
their first twobatters reach base and was able to bring them
both to the plate to score on atwo run single, giving them an
early 2-0 lead. However, Canada did not wasteany time in their
half of the inning, as Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) andJennifer
Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) hit back-to-back doubles to bring
inCanadas first run, but Salling was thrown out at third trying
to stretchher hit into a triple. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB)
then followed with a doubleof her own, and later scored on an
error before Erin Mclean (Whitby, ON) wasable to drive in another
run with a single, giving Canada a 3-2 lead.
Canadianstarting pitcher Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) settled
in after the firstinning, pitching six scoreless innings while
only allowing two hits in theseventh inning. She was able to
make quick work of Argentina the rest of theway, only allowing
three runners to reach base while striking out nine batters.
Thered and white was able to add two more runs in the bottom
of the third inning,as Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) and Noemie
Marin (Acton-Vale, QC) bothreached base before McLean delivered
another RBI single, bringing Bradley in toscore and Marin too
on a throwing error.
Matthews,Lawrick and McLean each had two hits for Canada, while
Salling, Marin, ErinCumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) and Kristy Odamura
(Richmond, BC) each added one oftheir own.
Canada(1-0) is scheduled to play back-to-back games today as
they will take on PuertoRico (0-1) at 11:00am ET and Venezuela
(1-0) at1:00pm ET.

JeuxPanaméricains: le Canada remporte son premier match face
à lArgentine
(Citéde Rock, Brésil) Après un autre délai causé par des mauvaisesconditions
au champ plus tôt dans la journée, léquipe féminine desoftball
du Canada a finalement été capable de jouer sa première partie
desJeux Panaméricains hier soir, se méritant une victoire de
5-2 face àlArgentine.
Endébut de première manche, lArgentine a pris avantage davoir
euleurs deux premiers frappeurs sur les sentiers alors quils
ont étécapable de pousser les deux coureuses au marbre sur un
simple, leur donnantainsi une avance de 2-0. Toutefois, léquipe
Canadienne na pasperdu de temps dans leur moitié de la même
manche, alors que Melanie Matthews(Surrey, C-B) et Jennifer Salling
(Port Coquitlam, C-B) ont chacun frappé undouble pour produire
le premier point du Canada, même si Salling a été retiréau troisième
but en essayant de se procurer dun coup de trois buts.Sheena
Lawrick (Calgary, AB) a aussi suivi avec un double de sa part,
et a étécapable de marquer plus tard sur une erreur avant quErin
McLean (Whitby,ON) a produit un autre point avec un simple, poussant
la marque à 3-2.
RobinMackin (Newmarket, ON), lanceuse partant du Canada, a été
capable de tourner lecoin après avoir alloué deux points en deuxième
manche, alors quelle alancé les six prochaines sans allouer
un point et seulement deux coups sûrs enseptième manche. Elle
a été capable de sen sortir rapidement à plusieursreprises,
laissant seulement trois frappeurs de lArgentine à se rendresur
les buts alors quelle a retiré neuf frappeurs au bâton.
Lerouge et blanc a été capable dajouter deux autres points en
fin detroisième manche, alors quAlison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON)
et Noémie Marin(Acton-Vale, QC) ont toutes les deux été capables
de se rendre sur les sentiersavant que McLean a produit un autre
point avec un simple pour pousser Bradleyau marbre et Marin aussi
sur une erreur.
Matthews,Lawrick et McLean ont chacun contribué deux coups sûrs
à lattaque, alorsque Salling, Marin, Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon,
SK) et Kristy Odamura (Richmond,BC) ont en chacun ajouté un.
LeCanada (1-0) est sensé retourner à laction aujourdhui alorsquils
joueront un programme double contre Puerto Rico (0-1) à 11:00(heure
de lEst) et Venezuela (1-0) à 13:00 (heure de lEst).
