OlympicSelection Camp Invitees Gain Valuable Experience in Beijing

(Beijing,China) – The athletes invited to the Canadian Softball
Olympic selection campin Beijing, China from September 30th-October
14th beganthe second phase of their efforts to secure a spot
on the 2008 Olympic Teamtoday. The team flew to Beijing early
last week to go through a good week oftraining before taking
on three other Olympic qualifiers at the China Cup,which includes
Australia, China and Chinese Taipei.

Thetraining portion of the selection camp was very successful,
as it allowed theplayers to showcase their abilities and familiarize
themselves with the actualsoftball venue of the 2008 Olympic
Games. The China Cup gave the players theopportunity to perform
skills, drills and scrimmages, and also to faceinternational-level
competition.

TheCanadian team has now begun phase two of the selection camp
as they opened theChina Cup with two games yesterday, including
a 5-2 win over China and a 2-0setback against Australia. In the
first game, Canada produced single runs inthe 3rd and 5th innings
before China tied the game 2-2 inthe bottom of the sixth. However,
Canada responded with three runs in the topof the seventh to
earn the win. All five Canadian runs were scored with twoouts,
which was certainly the key element highlighted by the coaching
staff.

Inthe second game, Canada faced a very effective Australian pitching
duo ofveteran pitcher Melanie Roche and Zara Mee, who held the
Canadian bats in checkby only allowing one hit. Despite the loss,
the coaching staff was stillpleased with the game, as it gave
the players a chance to see very goodpitching.

Inother action last night, Australia beat Chinese Taipei by a
9-4 score. Canada’snext game will be against Chinese Taipei early
tomorrow morning (midnight EDT).

Lesinvitées au camp de sélection Olympique gagnent de l’expérience
valable àBeijing

(Beijing,Chine) – Les athlètes invitées au camp de sélection
de l’équipe de softballcanadienne 
à Beijing, en Chine du 30 septembre au 14 octobre ont commencé
la deuxièmephase de leurs efforts à se tailler un poste sur l’équipe
Olympique de 2008aujourd’hui. L’équipe s’est déplacé à Beijing
tôt la semaine dernière dans lebut d’avoir une bonne semaine
d’entraînements avant de faire compétition avectrois autre équipes
qui se sont qualifiées pour les Olympiques à la Coupe deChine,
incluant l’Australie, la Chine et le Taipei chinois.

Laphase d’entraînement du camp de sélection était un grand succès,
alors qu’ellea permis aux joueuses de démontrer leurs habiletés
et se familiariser avec leterrain de softball actuel des Jeux
Olympiques de 2008. La Coupe de Chine donnela chance aux joueuses
de performer leurs habiletés, des exercices ainsi quedes matchs
préparatoire inter-équipe, et leur permet aussi de faire face
à dela compétition de niveau international.

L’équipecanadienne a maintenant commencé la deuxième phase du
camp de sélection alorsqu’ils ont ouvert la Coupe de Chine avec
deux parties hier, incluant unevictoire de 5-2 contre la Chine
et une défaite de 2-0 face à l’Australie. Lorsdu premier match,
le Canada a produit un point dans chacune des 3eet 5e manches
avant que la Chine égale la marque à 2-2 en fin desixième. Toutefois,
le Canada a répliqué avec trois points en septième manchepour
se mériter la victoire. Les cinq points du Canada ont tous été
marquésavec deux retraits, ce qui était certainement l’élément
clé retenu par lepersonnel des entraîneurs.

Lorsde la deuxième partie, le Canada a fait face a un tandem
de lanceusesaustraliennes très efficace, incluant la lanceuse
vétéran Melanie Roche et ZaraMee, qui ont été capables à limiter
les bâtons du Canada à seulement un coupsûr. Malgré la défaite,
le personnel des entraîneurs était content que lesjoueuses ont
eu la chance de voir des lanceurs très solides.

Ailleursdans le tournoi hier soir, l’Australie a vaincu le Taipei
chinois par la marquede 9-4. La prochaine partie du Canada sera
contre le Taipei chinois tôt demainmatin (minuit HAE).
