Canada claims 8-0 victory over Elite 

(Surrey, BC) – The Senior Women’s National Team continued itswinning
ways last night by defeating the Oregon Elite 8-0 in just five
innings.Canada now sits at the top of its pool with five wins
and no losses going intothe final day of round robin play at
the 2008 Canada Cup.

In yesterday’s contest, Melanie Matthews (Surrey,BC) led off
the top of the first inning with a towering homerun tocenterfield.
  A walk and stolen base by Jennifer Yee (NorthDelta, BC), put
her in an ideal scoring position.  Ultimately, Sheena Lawrick’s
(Calgary,AB) long fly ball to right field in the following play
was mishandled by anOregon outfielder, allowing Yee to score
from second base.

In the third inning, singles by Yee and Lawrickand an RBI double
by AlisonBradley (Pinkerton, ON) resulted in the third run being
scored for Canada.

The big offensive inning for the red and thewhite came in the
fourth, when the Elite opened the frame by surrendering a fewwalks.
 Lawrick hit a bloop single to right field, scoring two runners
andthen Megan Timpf (PortDover, ON) hit a pinch hit double hard
to left field driving in two more runs.

On the night, Danielle Lawrie (Langley,BC) threw a no-hitter,
recording five strikeouts and allowing only two walks.As a unit,
the team collected eight runs on seven hits.  Lawrick led theway
with three RBI’s, while Timpf, Yee, Bradley, Matthews and Erin
McLean (Whitby, ON)each added a single hit.

The much anticipated meeting between Canada andAustralia will
take place tonight, July 17th, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. PDT.
