BayRegula Leads Canada to Thrilling Victory!

(Beijing,China) – The Canadian Women’s softball team wanted a
win, and behind asensational performance from Lauren Bay Regula
(Trail, BC), they earned it witha hard fought 1-0 shutout win
over China. Bay Regula engaged in a pitching duelwith China’s
Wei Lu, and Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) delivered a keyinside-the-park
homerun in the sixth inning to score the only run of the game.

Throughthe opening five innings, both Bay regula and Wei Lu has
only surrendered onehit each, a single by Jennifer Yee in the
top of the first for Canada, and asingle up the middle by Chunxia
Li from China in the bottom of the second.Despite the lack of
hits, it seemed as though China was threatening everyinning with
runners on base, but Bay Regula was able to escape unharmed everytime.

JenniferYee led off the top of the sixth inning by connecting
with a pitch deep toright field. The right fielder was able to
get a glove on the ball around thesame height as the fence, but
was unable to make the catch. She first looked onthe other side
to see if the ball had gone over, but quickly realized that theball
had rolled back into play and quickly threw the ball in to the
infield.Yee raced around the bases and beat the throw home for
the inside-the-parkhomerun, and was greeted by her ecstatic teammates
in front of the dugout.

Aftermaking quick work of the Chinese hitters in the bottom of
the sixth, Bay Regularan into some trouble in the bottom of the
seventh. After Ai Zhang led off witha double to the right centerfield
gap, Bay Regula fielded a ground ball andwent after the lead
runner, forcing a rundown. As Jennifer Yee was about to tagthe
runner going towards third base, the ball fell to the ground
and China hadrunners on second and third with no outs. Canada
then intentionally walked thenext hitter to set up a double play
situation. Li Sun popped out to secondbase, followed by a ground
out to Bay Regula who was able to get the force outat home. Pinch
hitter Xia Pan then came up to the plate with the game on hershoulders,
but popped out to Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) in foul territorynear
the Canadian dugout to allow Canada to escape with the huge 1-0
win.

BayRegula pitched the complete game shutout for Canada, allowing
only two hits andtwo walks while striking out six Chinese batters.
Despite committing twoerrors, the Canadian defence was outstanding
to help securethe win. While China only managed two hits, Canada
had three, two of which cameoff the bat of Yee, who also drew
a walk. Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) hadCanada’s other hit,
a leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning.
