Canada finishes second place in Pool A with win over the Netherlands

(Caracas, Venezuela) The Canadian Women's National Softball Team
finished second place in Pool A following a 6-1 win over the
Netherlands. The second place finish secures double-life for
Canada in the playoff round, and they will play the United States
(7-0) at 3:30pm EDT on Wednesday in the page playoff system.

In the game against the Netherlands, Canada continued to score
runs early, as they put up two runs in the bottom of the first.
With two outs, Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC) singled and scored
on a two-run homerun by cleanup hitter Sheena Lawrick (Calgary,
AB).

Canada did not let up in the second inning, as they took advantage
of a few miscues by the Netherlands to produce four more runs.
Again with two outs, Evelyne Pare (Ile-Perrot, QC) hit a grounder
that was misplayed by the pitcher, which allowed Jill Russell
(London, ON) to race in to score from third. After Melanie Matthews
(Surrey, BC) reached base with a single and stole second to put
runners on first and third, Corrine Doornberg (Langley, BC) hit
a fly ball to left, but the left and center fielders collided
and dropped the ball, allowing two more runs to cross the plate.
Doornberg then scored on a single by Jenn Yee, giving Canada
the 6-0 lead after two innings of play.

The Netherlands finally got to Canadian starting pitcher Ashley
Lanz (Winnipeg, MB) in the top half of the fifth, as Solange
Starrenburg cracked a solo homerun. However, that was as close
as the Netherlands would get, as the loss dropped their record
to 4-3, good for fourth place in Pool A.

Lanz turned in a solid outing for Canada in the pitcher's circle,
allowing one earned run on three hits, and struck out two batters
without issuing a walk. Jenn Yee had two singles for Canada,
while Matthews, Lawrick, Russell and Pare each added a hit.
