FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 13, 2010

Canada defeats Venezuela in first playoff game at Pan American
Championship

(Bogota, Colombia) The Canadian Junior Women's National Team
took their first step towards qualifying for the 2011 ISF Junior
Women's World Championship with a 6-0 shutout of Venezuela in
the playoff round of the Pan American Championship in Bogota.
Canada needs one more win to be able to punch their ticket to
South Africa. The red and white will play at 6:00pm EDT tonight
against the losing team of the double-life crossover between
the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) took to the mound for Canada and spun
a three-hit shutout while striking out eight batters. Cater only
ran into trouble in the seventh, as Venezuela loaded the bases
with two outs and Cater got the last out with a soft line drive
to third. Canada banged out 12 hits including three triples and
a double but left 11 runners stranded on base.

Jennifer Gilbert (Mckinney, Texas) got things going for Canada
with a triple to the left field fence in the bottom of the first
as Canada put three runs on the scoreboard. Gilbert scored when
Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, California) hit a slap over
the shortstop's head. Brigitte Aizprua (Terrebonne, QC) moved
Hayward over with a bunt and Natasha Szlapetis (Brampton, ON)
drilled a single up the middle to score Hayward. Jacqueline Omichinski
(Abbotsford, BC) followed with a triple to left to score Szlapetis.

Canada added a run in the second as Erika Polidori (Brantford,
ON) led off with a triple and scored on a single by Aizprua.
In the first four innings, Canada left 9 runners on base.

In the fifth, Canada added two more runs as Corinne Brookhuis
(East York, ON) led off with a single and was replaced by pinch
runner Logan White (Brantford, ON) who moved to third on a ground-rule
double by Kristy Noble (Uxbridge, ON). White scored on a passed
ball before Polidori singled to score Noble to put Canada up
6-0.

Cater then closed out the game for the win.
