OSHAWA, Ont. – The Monroe Tribunes defeated the Durham College
women’s fastball team 6-3 on Sunday to claim the 2010 CAN-AM
Classic championship. Durham entered the tournament as the two-time
defending champions but fell short in the finals, as Monroe won
their first title since 2007.

After Durham allowed only one run in three games during the round
robin, Monroe found a way to crack the Lords defence as they
scored six runs in the championship game. Durham had nine hits
in the game, but only managed to score three runs as Monroe starting
pitcher Emile Rogers struck out six batters, four of which were
to end an inning. Rogers was named the tournament top pitcher.

Durham’s Janna Hagan went 3-for-4 in the finals, while teammate
Erin Dewey went 2-for-4. Monroe’s Angelica Vazino was 3-for-3
with an RBI and run scored. Shortstop Alex Hebert was named championship
MVP for her performance throughout the three day tournament.

The loss on Sunday was Durham’s only loss at the tournament,
as they went 3-0 during the round robin outscoring their opponents
22-1.

The Tribunes are always a strong opponent for DC, as they won
the CAN-AM Classic title in 2006 & 2007, were finalists in 2008
& 2009 and are three-time National Junior College champions.

Mohawk won the consolation championship with a 15-6 win over
Seneca.

The Lords next home action will be on Tuesday, October 7 as Durham
hosts the Conestoga Condors for a doubleheader. Game time at
Durham Field is at 6/8 p.m.

The top teams in Ontario will be in Oshawa from October 15-16,
2010 as the Lords are set to host the 2010 OCAA championship.
Prior to the OCAA Championship, Durham will travel to Saskatchewan
for the 2010 Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch National
Championship.
