Laurier Women's Softball Club went 3-1 this past weekend and
maintained second place in league standings. The Golden Hawks
and Ottawa Gee's both sported pink jersey's on Saturday afternoon
for Pink Day in the Park which has become a ritual for Laurier
Softball in honour of Breast Cancer victims. The two clubs renewed
what has been a storied rivalry in recent years. Both games saw
a number of momentum changes. Laurier was down 4-1 midway through
the game when the offense came alive to take an 8-4 lead into
the seventh inning. Gee Gee's replied with four runs off of a
number of Hawks mistakes to take yet another match-up between
these teams into extra innings. The Hawks were able to keep Ottawa
off the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning when Cassie
Taylor-Baptiste came off the bench to throw for the Hawks and
a one out clutch double by Jeannine Chen in the bottom of the
eighth won the opener for Laurier. Lisa Andreana went 2-3 at
the plate. The second game also saw Ottawa take an early 4-1
lead but the Golden Hawks would not go away thanks in part to
Jess O'Quinn who hit 3/4 and tied the game in the sixth inning
until a number of uncharacteristic errors allowed Ottawa to score
four unearned runs in the sixth inning to take the split in the
double header.

The Lady Hawks battled with a hungry Carlton Ravens team Sunday
afternoon for another double header. The Hawks scored twice in
the first and three times in the second inning with Tannys Mckee
hitting 3/3 and rode that lead for the 5-0 victory. The Ravens
were awakened by the potent Hawks offence in the second game
as Laurier hammered out 15 hits and scored 17 times in another
shutout victory. Melissa Jeffrey's was a home-run short of hitting
for the cycle and also threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts.

The Softball Club has elected not to travel to the University
of Saskatchewan this weekend to defend their National Title but
instead will wrap-up league play on Friday afternoon against
the Windsor Lancers and then face arch rival Western Mustangs
Saturday morning. These two clubs have developed a great rivalry
and established themselves as undoubtedly the top teams in the
country for women's softball.
