SASKATOON – The Durham College women’s fastball team had a podium
finish at the 2010 Canadian Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch
National Championship in Saskatoon this weekend as they won the
bronze medal.

Durham ran into a masterful pitching performance in the bronze
medal game as Saskatchewan’s Kelsey Garner retired all 15 DC
batters she faced, pitching a perfect game to advance to the
gold medal finals. Durham would finish the championship with
a 4-2 overall record, claiming their first medal at a national
championship.

“Even though the loss was disappointing as we were so close to
the gold medal game, we are very proud of our team on their play,
sportsmanship and determination,” said Durham head coach Jim
Nemish. “To come home with a bronze medal in our second national
championship appearance is a tremendous accomplishment. The facilities,
the host and even the weather was just first class all the way.”

Durham's Erica Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) and Tiana Cosentino (Toronto,
Ont.) earned national recognition being named to the championship
all-star team at their respective positions. Cosentino showed
no signs of slowing down after coming off the DL, as she finished
the championship with a .571 batting average, third highest of
any player.

In the ‘all Saskatchewan’ gold medal game, Garner would pitch
another gem as the Huskies defeated the University Regina 5-1
to claim the national championship.

This year’s third place finish is the Lords best result at the
national championship, as they placed fifth in Kitchener last
year.

The Lords will now have their sights set on the OCAA provincial
championship, as they host the finals at Durham College from
October 15-16, 2010.
