The University of Saskatchewan Lady Saxons Fastball team claimed
their second National Collegiate title in three years today,
at the 2010 Canadian Collegiate Ladies Fastpitch Championship
in Saskatoon. The Saxons went undefeated in pool play, but a
2-1 playoff loss to the University of Regina Cougars forced them
to take the long way to the championship, where they had to win
back to games today. In the semi final Kelsey Garner pitched
a perfect game as the Lady Saxons routed Durham College from
Oshawa by a score of 9-0. The final game was a nail biter as
the coach Earle Woodside’s crew trailed 1-0 heading into the
top of the 6th inning. In the sixth they exploded for 5 runs
off of Regina started Shirrae Muir who had held them to 1 run
in the previous 12 innings she had faced them. Tournament MVP
Anne Kelly got the rally going as she singled and scored the
tying run. The Cougars could not hold back the Saxon rampage
as Karmen Coffey, Casey Simpson and Jesse McNabb followed with
big hits to pad the lead. Garner who was pitching back to back
games, shut the door on the Cougars from that point, ending the
game emphatically with a big strikeout. The final was another
installment of the huge rivalry between these two schools, who
also had battled it out in the league championship game last
weekend, with the same result.

 

Four Lady Saxon players came away with individual honors.  They
had 3 players named to the tournament All-star Team: Pitcher-
Natalie Woodside, 2nd base - Anne Kelly and Right Fielder - Casey
Simpson. Katherine Guenther was named the top hitter, batting
an astounding .800 in round robin play. Anne Kelly was also named
playoff round MVP as she recorded 7 hits and scored 4 runs in
the Saxons 3 playoff games.
