The Active Softball Program is designed to teach fundamental

softball while playing fun, engaging activities!

NEW "Skills Test Challenge" Included in all Active Softball Kits!

New for the 2010-2011 school year is the Softball Skills Test
Challenge Manual which is now included in all Active Softball
Kits. The Manual will help teachers determine their students’
skill level in softball. Teachers can also use the Softball Skills
Test to evaluate students on their basic movement skills.

After using the fun activity cards (72 total) included in the
Active Softball Kit, which provides fun and exciting methods
of teaching fundamental softball skills to those who do or do
not play softball! Each of the skills evaluated in the Skills
Test Challenge Manual fit within the 2010 Health and Physical
Education Curriculum!

Softball Ontario is looking for teachers who would like to help
pilot the new Skills Test Challenge in their gym classes in 2011.
In order to do so, you must request an Active Softball Kit and
utilize the Manual and Result Sheets that are given in the Kit!
There are twenty-two (22) skills in total but foreseeing time
constraints, Softball Ontario asks that you test your participants
on five (5) skills and return those results back with the Kit
at the end of your loan period! The Softball Skills Test Challenge
can be run at any point in your curriculum seeing as you will
now have all necessary equipment from your using the Active Softball
Kits. Those teachers who request to use an Active Softball Kit
in January 2011 to March 2011 and test their students' in five
(5) Skills will be entered in a draw to win a FREE Pizza Lunch
- valued at $100!! The Skills Test Challenge

The Softball at School website will have a section that allows participants
to input their results from the Skills Test Competition. However,
until this component is complete, Softball Ontario would like
teachers to have their student’s manually record their results
on the included "Results Sheet" and send them back with the returned
Kit. The Softball Ontario Program Coordinator will implement
the results as part of the pilot project.

Try Softball Program in 2011!

Are you looking for a FUN and different way to teach fundamental
movement skills like throwing, catching, hitting, and running,
while encouraging physical activity and physical fitness? Softball
Ontario has a great program for you to try! The Try Softball
Program is available to your JK to Grade 5 Students FREE OF CHARGE
and can be used indoors so your class can play Softball regardless
of the weather! Participating schools will receive a Try Softball
Kit for a loan period of one (1) month.

The TRY Softball Program has been used in hundreds of schools
and camps across Ontario allowing thousands of students to play
a modified version of softball. Teachers are loaned free softball
equipment and provided with manuals introducing BlastBall and
Softball Canada’s Learn to Play Program.

Try Softball is geared towards children ages 4-10 years old.
The Try Program includes:

A BlastBall Game
        o Safety Bat
        o BlastBase (that HONKS!)
        o Batting-Tee
A Learn to Play Manual (Yours to Keep!)
A BlastBall Manual (Yours to Keep!)
FREE gifts and Activity Books for all participants!!
To address any concerns, all of the equipment is manufactured
using child-safe materials; the bat and ball are made of a soft
foam material, removing safety concerns that are created by aluminum
bats and hard balls. There are no equipment requirements for
the students, as softball gloves are not required to participate
in the game.

What is BlastBall and Learn to Play?
BlastBall and Learn to Play are great programs designed to introduce
the sport of softball to children. The programs foster the development
of all players, including players with high and low skill levels.
Activities and lead-up games are patterned after informal playground
games that promise FUN and LOTS OF ACTION. The fantastic manuals
are resources given to your school to keep as a thank-you for
participating in our program.

"BlastBall is a FUN way to introduce sotball. The younger grades
enjoyed the noise the base made when they stepped on it!" - Jeff,
Central Avenue Public School.

How can you participate?
The Kits are available on a first-come - first-served basis;
contact Softball Ontario as soon as possible to book your month.
For further details on Softball Ontario’s TRY SOFTBALL program
or to borrow a TRY Kit for your school, please contact Carly

Softball at School Website

Softball Ontario is proud to announce the new address for our
Softball at School website (www.softballatschool.ca). The website
is an online resource centre created for elementary school teachers
and students to be able to access a list of house league softball
associations in Ontario, provide them with "best practices,"
and inform teachers about upcoming giveaways. Also, teachers
and students can obtain assistance with skill development, softball
terms, and download reward items!

The website also allows both teachers and their students to log
in to see specific information and programs geared towards both.
The teacher section is designed to assist Ontario elementary
school educators by providing resources that will help meet curriculum
expectations for health and physical education while teaching
students the sport of softball in a FUN and exciting way.

Each teacher can log in and sign up for both of our Softball
School programs (TRY and ACTIVE) as well as educate themselves
to better teach their classes the game of softball. The student
section helps children find where they can sign up to play softball
in their home-town as well as download free drills and games
to play with their friends!

Coming in 2011 is the new Skills Test Challenge portion of the
website which will enable teachers and/or students to input their
results of the Skills Test Challenge, which is included in ALL
Active Softball Kits this school year!

the Active Softball Kit in specific months, which will enable
those teachers to be eligible to win an AWESOME prize! Also,
all participating teachers who complete a feedback questionnaire
and return it with the Active Kit will win a cool “Thank You”
gift from Softball Ontario!! Remember: Your feedback matters!

Local Softball Associations Partner with Elementary Schools

New for 2011! Softball Ontario is introducing the Active Softball
Partnership program. Currently, Softball Ontario offers a Partnership
Program for both the Try Softball School Program and the Active
Softball School program but never gave Elementary School teacher’s
the opportunity to invite someone to come to their class to help
demonstrate softball drills. Softball Ontario received some questions
regarding the availability to have someone come to their class
and help out with the Active Softball Program. So who better
to come out then those who know Softball best- Your Local Softball
Association Volunteers!

On the request forms for 2011, a new box will be on the request
form allowing those teachers who would be interested in having
an individual from the local Softball Association to come during
their class period to help with the Active Softball Program to
mark an "X" in the box!

As part of this program, the local Softball Association will
be working with Softball Ontario to promote the game of softball
in your area and encourage children to register with their league.
Softball Ontario will be letting the local Softball Associations
know when an Active Kit is at an Elementary School in their area.
If the teacher has checked the box that they are interested in
partnering up with an Association we will help to make that happen!

This Partnership Program is an awesome way to have both the local
Softball Association and Elementary Schools maximize the benefits
of the Active Softball Program and Softball Ontario. By creating
a Partnership between the two, Associations will be helping the
Elementary School Teachers with the game and proper technique
instruction, all while the Associations get to know those Elementary
Schools in their community and hope to increase the number of
kids interested in the game of Softball!
