Durham Lords Fall Recap - Happy Holidays from the Durham Lords

OSHAWA, Ont. - With exams in progress and the holidays nearing,
the fall semester for varsity athletics is in the books. In the
fall of 2010, there were a number of achievements that the Durham
College varsity programs had to celebrate. Here is a brief look
at some of the highlights:

Durham Lords Top 10 Moments in 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6POJzRNArE

Men’s & Women’s Golf
The Durham College golf team had a phenomenal year on the links.
The Lords racked up four medals at the OCAA Championship; the
women’s team won the provincial title, while the men’s team took
home the silver. Kayleigh Kraemer and Tiffany Albath also took
home individual honours, winning gold and silver respectively.

Their great success at the OCAA championships led the team to
a trip to CCAA National Championship in Kamloops, BC. The Lords
did not let up and continued their excellent play on the West
coast as the women’s team went on to capture the CCAA National
championship, the first in team history. In winning the team
championship, Albath and Kraemer were also able to secure individual
CCAA medals, Albath taking the silver medal, while Kraemer took
home bronze..

The Lords lit up the links prior to the championships, winning
16 medals at three invitational tournaments. Tyson Wetherup and
Kayleigh Kraemer won the individual titles at the DC Open.

Baseball
Durham College participated in their sixth straight CIBA National
Baseball Championship in October, where the Lords finished in
the final four, falling to eventual national champions McGill
University 3-0 in the semi-finals.

The trip to nationals came after an exciting undefeated season
that saw the Lords dominate the competition enroute to a CIBA
Ontario championship. The Lords posted a perfect 16-0 conference
record and defeated the Humber Hawks in the CIBA Ontario Championship
finals.

Tyler Mitchell was honoured following the regular season as he
was named the CIBA Ontario top hitter. Mitchell had a .516 batting
average, the highest average of any player in the country.

Women’s Fastball
Durham College claimed gold at the OCAA women’s fastball championship
with a 10-1 victory over the St. Clair Saints in the championship
game. The gold medal victory marks the Lords 15th provincial
title in women’s fastball, the most of any college in the OCAA.

In their second appearance at the Canadian Intercollegiate Women's
Fastpitch National Championship, Durham earned their first ever
national medal, picking up the national bronze. The Lords went
undefeated in OCAA league play, while posting an impressive overall
record of 20-4.

Erin Dewey (Port Hope, Ont.) made headlines earning her third
straight OCAA Player of the Year award. In three years with the
Lords, Dewey’s career average is .557, making her the OCAA’s
all-time career batting leader, breaking a record that has stood
since 1992. The Lords’ Nicole McCoy and Kayla MacLean combined
to pitch a no hitter in the final game of the season against
Conestoga.

Women’s Soccer
The Lords had an excellent season finishing with a 5-1-2 regular
season record, good for 3rd place in the OCAA east region. The
team also had a very impressive stretch of five straight shutouts
during the regular season.

Fifth year goalkeeper Morgan Kelly was integral to the Lords
success, earning six clean sheets throughout the season on her
way to OCAA League all-star recognition. Whitby native Jenn Sheehan
also had a breakout year in the midfield, racking up six goals
and OCAA all-star status. Laura Copeland finished third in league
scoring averaging .88 goals per game.

Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team had a competitive year finishing in fourth
place in the Central East Region. Jelani DeJonge and Benn VanderEyken
both had excellent years on the pitch, earning provincial all-star
recognition.

The Lords also won their second straight Campus Cup with a 4-0
victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks.

Provincially Ranked
The spotlight has been shining on the entire Durham Lords varsity
program this season as three of four teams (men’s and women’s
basketball & women’s volleyball) are currently provincially ranked.
Men’s basketball and volleyball is also nationally ranked heading
into the new year.

With an undefeated record, the Lords men’s volleyball program
sits in third spot. The Lords have been on fire this season,
with third year players PJ Cornelius and Steve Clarey leading
the charge. The Lords are the only undefeated team remaining
in the OCAA.

The Lords women’s volleyball team has played with a lot of heart
this season, going 5-5 so far. Captain Kourtney Cyr had an unbelievable
34 digs in a five set victory over the George Brown Huskies.
Kerri Fotherby was two blocks shy of the OCAA record for most
blocks in a game as she recorded 11 in the Lords 3-2 win over
La Cite. Fotherby and her Lords teammates did tie an OCAA single-game
record with a total of 23 blocks in the match.

With CCAA National Championship just around the corner, the men’s
basketball team continues to impress and currently sits fifth
in the OCAA rankings with a record of 7-3, good for second place
in the East Region. The team also won their first Dave Stewart
tip-off Championship title in 13 years.
The women’s basketball is off to a wonderful start for the 2010
season, holding a record of 6-2. The strong start has led the
Lords to sixth spot in the current OCAA rankings. Durham also
ended an eleven game losing streak against Seneca with a 72-67
victory over the Sting.

Sports Illustrated
Twin sisters Erica and Erin Dewey of the women’s fastball team
certainly made their mark at Durham College in 2010; both were
featured in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of the November
11 issue of Sports Illustrated. The sisters became the second
and third Lords to appear in the popular magazine, after pitcher
Erin Smith was featured in the October 2004 issue.

A Day to Remember
October 16th, 2010 was a fantastic day for Durham College varsity
sports. In OCAA fastball action, the women’s team hosted the
provincial championships, eventually winning the coveted title;
their 15th overall. The men’s baseball team also hosted a provincial
finals series against the Humber Hawks; the men would win the
three game set 2-0 to cap off a perfect season and win the CIBA
Ontario Championship. Back on the hard-court, the men’s team
found similar success as they routed Fanshawe 82-67 at the CRWC
to win their first Dave Stewart Tip-off Championship in 13 years.
