CEPHAS ROTH TOURNAMENT - Tavistock


Hill United Chiefs win  again...

Undefeated at the Legends and against some great opposition, the top 4 
ISC ranked teams were in the semi-finals, the Chiefs ran the table in 
Tavistock as well.

Sunday afternoon, thunder in the distance, hot and dusty infields, and 
the two top ISC  clubs in the final game at Queen's Park in Tavistock; 
the New York Gremlins vs Hill  United from nearby Six Nations.

The Gremlins had pool play wins over

Heading into  the playoffs, the Gremlins scored single runs  in the 2nd 
thru the 6th to defeat the Shakespeare Falcons 5 - 2...Jake Albrecht and 
Jamie  Boyd providing the RBIs for the Falcons.  The Gremlins with 
homers from Patrick Shannon, and Brian Abrey, who also  contributed a 
single..as did Mathieu Roy.

NY Gremlins defeated the Jarvis Travellers 8 - 1.  The second inning New 
York  batted around scoring 6 runs on 4 hits....Wayne Laulu added runs 
in the 3rd and 5th for the Gremlins.  The only run for Jarvis  was from 
Ryan Wolfe, a single to  lead off the 1st, with Freddy Terkelson and 
Ryan Boland bringing Ryan home.

The KW Cubs went extra innings with Midland.  The Explorers opened with 
3 runs in the top of the first. Dan Loney a single, Dale Levy a single 
and a homer from Eddy Ketelhut.  The Cubs answered in  the 2nd..Travis 
Hofstetter and Tyler McNevan, each a double, and a Midland error....the 
Cubs were behind by one.

Midland's Adam Lalonde, Red Levy and Ed Ketelhut scored in the 3rd...but 
the Cubs  came back with 4 of their own to tie the game...Alan Phibbs 
with a 2 RBI single scored Bob Gillow and Adam Hiller, and Tyler McNevan 
singled to score Ryan Dedman who was runnig for Phibbs.

Kyle Beane opened the 6th for Midland with a home run.  "7th and Dan 
Loney a triple and brought  in by a Dale Levy sacrifice fly to centre.

..Down by two in  the 7th , Pat Humprhies doubled and Chad Wells homered 
off Don Scott to tie  the game at 8.

Top  of the 8th...ITB, Kettlehut  at 2nd...Steve Horning a RBI single  
scoes Eddy  and Midland is up by one...

This time the Cubs have a runner at 2nd...Dan Mitchell....Grant Baechler 
walks, Bob Gillow a single, brings in Mitchell, a walk to Adam Hiller, 
bases loaded, and Pat Humphries in the batter's box against Don 
Scott...a single, a RBI and the Cubs win...

Earlier on Saturday Hill United had beaten Port Elgin 10 - 4..Mitch 
Hardy got  the win for Hill,

Sunday morning brought the Cubs  and Hill  back to Queen's Park for the 
semi...Adam Folkard allowed 2 hits and shut put the Cubs, with Hill 
scoring 8 on 12 hits....Nick Shailes went 3 for3, single, triple and a 
homerun..Jeff Ellsworth  2 for 3..singles, Jason Hill 3 doubles, all 
with RBIs attached.  Ryan Thompson had a double  as well.

The  final...Gremlins vs Hill United..

Hill on board with a run  in the first..Brad Ezekiel walks, Ellsworth 
bunt him to 2nd and Shailes a double for the RBI.

No runs for either club til  the 5th, when Paul Walford  single, Mathieu 
Roy walks, same for Rhys Casley, and Pat Shannon at the plate, a 3 RBI 
double puts the Gremlins up 3 - 1

Hill, home team, bottom  of the  7th...top of the order...Brad Ezekiel, 
single, Jeff Ellsworth 2 RBI homer, Nick Shailes single, moved to 2nd on 
a  wild pitch, strike out to Steve Mullaley, Jason Hill reaches 
1st...and Mark Johnson a single scores Shailes and Hill, another 
tournament title..

In the B finals...

The Toronto Gators beat the Wiarton Nationals 2 - 1.  Gators got on 
board first scoring two runs in the 3rd...Ray Carr reached 1st on an 
error, Joel Langford doubled, Jason Surdyck advanced them both on a 
ground ball  to 3rd...both scored on an error.

In the 5th, Wiarton picked up a  run on a Taylor McConnel's single, Matt 
Robbins ground out moved  him to 2nd..and a stolen base and wild  pitch 
scored McConnel.

..Dustin Veenhoof (LP) 2 runs on 3 hits, and 6 left on base..Justin 
Schofield (WP) Andrew Putnam in relief (6th inning) Schofield...5 
innings, 1 run, 5 hits, 2 Ks...Putnaum, 2 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits, and 3Ks..

Scott Wagar was very impressive against the Wiarton Nationals in Game 4.

A perfect game  for the KW Cub pitcher.

and on the offence for  the Cubs

3 runs in the 2nd..Andy Baechler a 2 run homer, bringing in Pat 
Humphries, and Grant Baechler, sacrifice fly to centre scored Travis 
Hoffstetter who reached on a walk.  Nate Bauman picked up a single as well

In the 4th, Nate Bauman singled, Dan Mitchell sacrificed him to 
2nd...Grant Baechler picked up his 2nd RBI of the game with  a single, 
Bob Gillows triple then scored Grant Baechler.

In the 6th...Dan Mitchell led off with a single, Grant Baechler walked, 
Bob Gillow, ground out to short, and Adam Hiller singled to score 
Mitchell and Baechler...final score, 7 - 0....

PASSINGS

This past weekend at Tavistock fans and players heard of some recent 
deaths in the fastball family.

ISC volunteer Roseanne Allan's mother passed away this past Friday in 
Owen Sound

Fred Morgan, one of the games controllers for many years at many local  
tournaments, including the Cephas Roth and the Legends of Fastball  lost 
his brother this past Saturday evening,  following a long illness.

Ray Alviano's aunt passed away on  the weekend, in Guelph.


ISC CANADA EAST, Under 21 Qualifier - Innerkip

Legends at Peter Hallman Ball Yard, then the U18 in New Dundee, followed 
by  the Cephas Roth in Tavistock, and this weekend,  the Under 21 ISC 
Canada East Qualifier...in Innerkip..and then the OASA Great Lakes in 
Jarvis.

There  are 6 good young (under 21) fastball teams in Innerkip this 
weekend for  a roundrobin qualifier. St Mary's and Tavistock open on 
Friday at 7pm, then Walkeron vs Elmira and Alvinston vs Straffordille at 9pm

Saturday the schedule continues with a 10 am start...Satffordville vs 
Elmira, St Mary's vs Walketon, and at noon, Alvinston vs Tavistock.

Games are scheduled at 2, 4 and 6 pm as well with a final pool play game 
Sunday morning at 9am, followed by a 2 vs 3 game...at 11am...winner to 
meet the 1st place team at 1pm for the championships...


Some beautiful  ball diamonds in Innerkip, recently renovated, close to 
one another, a nice size pavilion, a good concession area, close to the 
401 for teams and fans travel,  just south of Tavistock for the fans who 
enjoyed the Cephas Roth last weekend.....just about ideal for a tournament.
