ISC II #18 St. Paul, MN ABS-Villard finish second at Rice Lake

St. Paul, Minnesota

The #18 ISC II ranked team, ASB-Villard of St. Paul, Minnesota, traveled
to Rice Lake, Wisconsin this past weekend and came away with a second place
finish in the Rice Lake Invitational.

Missing nearly a handful of players, Villard performed well on the
weekend, posting a record of 4-2. Their overall record now stands at 15-10.

Villard opened the weekend Saturday morning against Line-X Spray On of
La Crosse, Wisconsin and came away with a 3-0 win. Kevin Bahn led off the
second inning with a double then scored on Jeff Henry’s single.

The following innings, Jeff Schoeberl’s two-out homer gave Villard a 2-0
lead.

The final Villard run came in the fifth inning when Galen Bahn singled
with one out, then scored on Jeff Schoeberl’s single with two outs.

Next for Villard was Leinenkugel Legends of Chippewa Falls,
Wisconsin. Villard scored the games first run in the top of the first
inning. Zach Goring reached on an error and moved to second on Tom
Schoeberl’s sac bunt. Three batters later, with two outs, Goring scored on
pick-up player Chris Diethert’s sac fly to centerfield.

A two-out rally in the second inning gave Villard a 3-0 lead. Jimmy
Walker reached base by error, Goring walked. Walker scored on Tom
Schoeberl’s single and Goring scored on Jeff Schoeberl’s single.

Leinie’s scored a run in the third, but Villard scored again in the
fourth. It was another two out rally as Goring singled then stole
second. Tom Schoeberl singled, then Jeff Schoeberl drove home Goring.

Leinie’s put up one run in each the fourth and fifth innings.

The sixth inning saw Villard tack on three insurance runs when with one
out, pinch hitter Ben Lang doubled then scored on Jeff Schoeberl’s
homer. Two batters later, Diethert homered as well.

New Image Salon of Monfort, Wisconsin was Villard’s final opponent on
Saturday. New Image scored a run in second, third and fifth innings for a
3-0 lead.

Goring led off the fifth inning with a home run. Then with two outs,
Kevin Bahn doubled, then scored on Jeff Henry’s single.

New Image added another run in the top of the sixth. Villard would tie
the game in the sixth. Galen Bahn singled to lead off the inning, then
with two outs, Goring homered again to bring the score even.

The score would remain even as the game headed to the eight inning, with
Joel Cooley in relief of Jeff Schoeberl.

With one out, in the bottom of the eighth inning, Galen Bahn hit a
walk-off home run to left field to send Villard into the Winner’s Bracket
final Sunday.

The Winner’s Bracket final matched Villard against fellow Twin Cities
club PBI of West St. Paul.

PBI jumped to an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second
innings.

Jeff Henry singled with one out in the second, Jack Rowan reached on an
error. Galen Bahn’s single scored Henry. Rowan scored on a safety squeeze
by Lang.

The game remained tied until PBI put three runs on the board in the
fifth inning. Villard countered with one run in their half of the fifth
when Zach Goring led off with a single then scored on Kevin Bahn’s single
three batters later.

PBI added two more runs in the sixth to claim a 7-3 victory with Joel
Cooley taking the loss.

The PBI loss sent Villard to the Third Place game and a rematch against
New Image.

No extra innings were needed in this contest as Villard took a 7-2
decision and a Championship Game rematch with PBI.

Against New Image, Goring led off the bottom of the first with a double,
scoring on Tom Schoeberl’s single, for a 1-0 lead.

Villard would add two more in the bottom of the third when with one out,
Jeff Schoeberl and Kevin Bahn each singled. With two outs, both scored on
Jeff Henry’s single.

New Image got on the board in the fourth with two runs, but Villard
countered in the fifth with four runs.

Tom Schoeberl led off with a single, then scored on Jeff Schoeberl’s
double. The next batter, Kevin Bahn hit a two-run home run. Chris
Diethert then singled, later scoring.

The championship game saw Villard fall to PBI 7-0 in 5 innings. PBI led
2-0 until PBI scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Villard only
managed two hits in the tourneys title game.

Zach Goring, infield, Kevin Bahn, outfield, and Jeff Schoeberl, utility,
were named to the All Tournament team.
Villard travels to Dawson, Minnesota this weekend for the Riverfest
Tournament.
