St. Thomas & District League semi-finals underway

Last evening, played in front of approximately 150-200 fans, on a beautiful evening for ball, the Glencoe Astros defeated the Alvinston Indians in a great fastball game for the fans, by the final score of 7-5 in 11 innings.

The Astros go up 1-0 in the best of five semi-finals series, in the St. Thomas and District Fastball League Playoffs. The Astros went up 2-0 early in the game, only to see Alvinston tie it up in the bottom of the third.

Glencoe added a run in the fourth, and so did the Indians to notch the game at 3. Then no runs were scored until the top of the tenth, when with the international rule in effect, Glencoe scored a run, but so did the Indians in their home half. Now at 4-4, Glencoe added three runs in the top of the 11th, while Alvinston added only one. Final score 7-5.

This see-saw battle matched Glencoe’s pitcher Shaun Winship, against Alvinston’s moundman Doug Charlton. Winship fanned 13 Alvinston batters in the victory allowing 13 hits, while Charlton struckout 9 in the loss allowing 11 hits. Scoring for the Indians were Marc Greenwood (2), Scott Smith, Ryan Chapman, and Andy Triest.

Driving in the runs were Greenwood, Charlton, Joe Triest, Jason Hope, and Smith. Marc Greenwood hit a solo home run for the Indians, while Greg Huston for Glencoe also went deep in the game. J. Triest and Smith each had 3 hits in the matchup for the home team. Greenwood, A. Triest, and Mike Black added two hits a piece in the contest.

Next game is Tuesday in Glencoe beginning at 8:00pm, in what is already shaping up to be a great semi-final series.

In the other best of five semi final, top seed Union Storm will play Highgate Rock.
