Thomson Merchants in Dubuque

The Thomson Area Merchants rolled to there 1st tournament win of the 06 season at the Dubuque Hall of Fame tournament in Iowa on Saturday. Led by ace Czech Republic International pitcher Jonas Mach, Thomson won all three games played convincingly.

In the first run-ruled shortened game against Hammerheads strong team hitting led to a 10-0 victory. Highlights of the offensive attack included a 2 run home run to New Zealand catcher Casey Eden.

In the second pool play game vs the Junior Sox out of Quad Cities, young pitcher Mach again dominated the opposition in the early innings, before being replaced for the save by veteran thrower Larry Tempe. The end score being 6-1, including a towering 2 run shot over the right field fence by lead off hitter Justin Eissens

In the championship final against Tauber Construction, Thomson again jumped out to a early lead courtesy of back to back doubles by Kevin Anderson and Michael House. Thomson built on this lead to end up winning the game 7-1. Eden again contributed a home run over the center field fence.

Thomson now continues to build towards our local ISC qualifier in Walcott in late June. The team has ambitions of ISC qualification but must beat strong competition including the Quad City Sox to advance to the ISC tournament in Kitchener.

Another highlight of the day for Thomson was seeing hard hitting veteran Gerry Westemeier inducted into the Dubuque Fastpitch Hall of Fame. This is as a reward of many years of commitment both on and off the diamond by Gerry. Congratulations to Gerry for this achievement. We still look forward to seeing you on the diamond for many years to come.
