Ups and downs
CHARLOTTETOWN – For Mark Arsenault, playing in a ball tournament last weekend in Erie, Pa., was almost like being a rookie again.
He suited up with the Midland Explorers from Michigan in the Erie Classic – his first-ever International Softball Congress (ISC) tournament experience. The tournament was a bit of an eye-opener for the Charlottetown resident and veteran member of the Charlottetown Fawcetts’ ball club.
“When it boils down, the games are a little bit faster and the talent is deeper, but it’s the same rules,” said Arsenault, who caught for the Explorers in three of their five tournament games and was their designated hitter in another game. He drove a home run over the left-field fence in one of the games.
“It was a good tournament,” he assessed. “I had my ups and downs.”
Arsenault made a strong enough impression that he will be the team’s catcher for their two biggest weekends of the year – the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) American nationals this weekend in South Bend, Ind., and the ISC world tournament in Quad Cities from Aug. 14 to 20.
