Jarvis ON Travelers ride right arm of flame-thrower Donny Scott enroute to second ISC World title in two years
The Jarvis ON Travelers clinched their second consecutive ISC World Tournament title Sunday, with a 5-4 win over Chicago NY. Jarvis pitcher Don Scott went the distance with a gutsy performance, capping an ISC World Tournament in which he pitched every inning but two, a total of 34 innings over 6 days. Scott, from Ontario Canada, pitched for 2008 and 2009 ISC champions, the Ontario based Kitchener Rivershark Twins, and joined the 2010 World Champion Jarvis ON Travelers when Kitchener shuttered operations. He was expected to compliment Jarvis ace Adam Folkard, the 2009 ISF gold medal pitcher. But Folkard suffered a late season injury two weeks ago at the Erie tournament, aggravating a previous injury, and placing Jarvis’ 2011 title hopes in jeaopardy. But Scott, one of the hardest throwers in the game, rose to the occasion. Relying on his signature rise ball, he overpowered early round opponents, until the winner’s bracket final and championship games against talent laden Chicago/NY, where he faced his biggest challenges.
A teammate said of Scott “He has the heart of a lion”.
In the winner’s bracket final, he tossed a 10 strikeout 3 hitter, surrendering only two runs in the fifth inning. Scott was staked to a 5-0 lead in the championship game Saturday night, and appeared to enroute to an easy win. But the strain of more than 30 innings, and high-velocity strike-out pitching began to wear on Scott who appeared visibly fatigued in the 6th when Chicago/NY pulled to within a run and appeared to have turned the momentum in their direction. Fans looked down the sideline to see Andrew Phibbs in the bullpen, drawing throughts of Phibb’s role in last year’s title game after Folkard had carried the load. Scott was running on fumes, but appeared to get a shot of adrenalin when he escaped the sixth inning with the lead intact. Scott turned up the dial one last time, striking out two more in the final frame, and with it, set off the Travelers World Championship celebration for the second time in two years.
The championship game pitted two teams that met in the winner’s bracket final on Friday night, with Jarvis coming away a 3-2 winner.
Jarvis jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a run in the first and four more in the fourth and appeared to have the game well in hand, but Chicago NY would not go quietly. 2010 ISC MVP Nick Shailes scored the game’s first run in the first, singling, advancing to second on a Brad Rona single, to third on a wild pitch, and scoring on another wild pitch by Andrew Kirkpatrick.
Chicago NY broke the ice in the bottom of the 4th with two runs, on an RBI triple by La Hoz following a lead off single by Rhys Casley and RBI single by Travis Wilson. In the 6th, it was once again Rhys Casley, with his third hit of the game, starting the Chicago/NY rally, followed by an RBI single by Pat Shannon and another RBI single by Travis Wilson. Steve Mullaley kept hope alive for Chicago/NY in the 7th, with a lead off single, but Scott reached back for what remained in the tank, and closed things out.
Jarvis’ young Ben Enoka was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, an impressive accomplishment for a player just three years removed from the juniors program, and already among the game’s best players.
