Sebringville’s Don Scott named top pitcher

For a first-time venture, the Mitchell Mets of the South Perth Men’s Fastball League – the longest-current existing team in the SPMFL – fared well at the 46-team International Softball Congress (ISC) world fastpitch championships in Quad Cities, Iowa last week.
The Mets won their first two games of the tournament, 6-0 over the Quad Cities Silver Bullets on opening night, and an 8-4 upset win over Ashland, Ohio Aug. 14. The locals didn’t fare out well at all against the #1 ranked, and eventual champion Jarvis Travelers, in a 14-0 mercy rule loss last Tuesday, Aug. 16.
After a day off, the Mets were eliminated by their SPMFL rivals, the Shakespeare Falcons, 8-1.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Mets’ player/coach Jeff Pauli. “It was an experience for all of us to play in something like this, and we did okay.
“Our goal was to win one game and we did that,” he said.
Darryl Eidt had four hits and Matt McGill and A.J. Moses hit home runs to lift the Mets to the win over Ashland, the only upset in the second round of the tournament against previously ranked teams. Ashland would go on to win the ISC II championship.
Kevin Gettler earned the pitching win, and helped his cause with a two-run double to cap the scoring in the seventh. Kevin Pomfret finished up.
Jarvis broke their game open with a nine-run fourth off a trio of Mets’ pitchers last Tuesday, but SPMFL colleague Don Scott, of Sebringville, a Jarvis pickup for the worlds, tossed a five-inning no-hitter for the pitching win.
Scott was added to the Jarvis roster as an insurance policy, backing up the ace of the staff, Adam Folkard. Folkard was sidelined with an injury, and Scott was handed the ball, and he won all six games for the Travelers, including a 5-4 victory over the New York City / Chicago Gremlins last Saturday in the championship game.
Scott allowed four earned runs on eight hits and struck out eight in going the distance against a potent Gremlins’ lineup.
Scott finished with a 1.65 ERA in 34 innings and struck out 52, and was named the Outstanding Pitcher of the tournament. Click here for complete story.
