From Gold Country News Services:
Josh Van Meter connected on a three-run home run in the first inning and the Roseville Eagles never looked back in getting on their way to a 5-2 win over the East Bay Bashers to win the championship game of last Sunday’s 46th annual Colfax Recreation Association’s Men’s Fast Pitch Classic.
Van Meter’s three-run blast gave the Eagles all the tallies they would need as winning pitcher Ed Gasper spaced out five hits to the Bashers and allowed just single runs in the fourth and fifth frames.
Van Meter finished the title game by going 3×4 and was named to the all-tourney squad while Gasper, who was a perfect 4-0 in the tourney, was the recipient of the Doug Hess Memorial Award as the tourney’s outstanding pitcher.
Jabari Wimbs, Mario Periera and Rich Lopea all hit safely for the Eagles in the title game while Larry Terronez, Matt Christensen, Donner Walters, Monty Wells and Ben Maddux each had hits for the Bashers.
The Eagles, the tourney’s No. 2 seed after pool play, advanced to the championship game with an 8-5 win over the Nevada County Bulldogs. Rusty Newnan’s home run and two-rap games from Lopez, Tyler Phillips and Mark Summers sparked the winners. Jarrett Roenicki went 3×3 for the Bulldogs. Click here to continue reading.

Editor’s note: Wondering about the “Crash” Fontana moniker? He earned it during the championship game: Kevin was playing left field in the championship game and a ball was hit deep to the fence. He got the ball, but ran face first into the fence, with a black eye to show for it. (Kevin is at far left in photo above…that’s not eye black…)
