The Philippines scored four runs in the fourth inning to secure the 4-3 victory. Designated hitter Oscar Bradshaw knocked in two runs before scoring himself in the surge. James Darby took the loss after pitching a complete game and striking out 10.

South Africa led 5-0 after three innings, but the Czech Republic scrapped back with seven runs in the next two innings, and prevailed 8-6. Vaclav Svoboda went 2-for-3 with four RBIs for the Czechs, while winning pitcher Lubomir Vrbensky did not allow an earned run in 42?3 innings of relief.

Australian pitcher Adam Folkard was within one pitch of throwing a perfect game. However, Carlos Ojeda spoiled that bid with a two-out single in the seventh inning. Joe Vilchez also collected a hit, but it was of little consequence as the Aussies breezed to a 7-0 shutout. Folkard’s line included 15 strikeouts. Australian catcher Mike Harrow went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Right-fielder Josh Davison also drove in a pair.

Puerto Rico’s offence exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning and posted a convincing 9-0 victory. German Diaz scattered four hits in five innings, then Carlos Lara shut the door with one inning of hitless relief.

Japan’s leadoff hitter Masateru Matsuoka set the tone for the game with a home run in the team’s first at-bat. Kenji Nakamura and Ryuji Hazeyama both hit two-run home runs in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Japan went on to outhit the Mexicans 15-4.

Canada opened the tournament by rolling over Argentina 8-1 in five innings.
Kevin Schellenberg’s RBI single gave the hosts a seven-run lead and invoked the mercy rule which comes into play if a team is up five runs after five innings.
