The organizing committee of the 2011 Pepsi Canadian Under-19 Men’s Fastpitch Championship has delivered some big news – and a big cheque – to the Fredericton Boys Fastpitch Association.
The $60,000 proceeds from the national tournament have been given to the boys association.
“Almost all areas of the tournament exceeded our expectations,” said Wayne Brown, co-chair of the tournament held Aug. 8-14 at Prospect Street Park.
“The 300 weekly passes sold, merchandise, food and beverage, 50/50 and programs sales all contributed to the amount that we can transfer to the FBFA to help support their program.
“As well, support from our corporate and business sponsors was key in allowing us to host this level of national championship,” Brown said.
The Fredericton Boys Fastpitch Association was founded six years ago. In the inaugural season, there were 15 players registered for the summer. This season, there were more than 150 players at multiple age levels. The tournament proceeds will allow the program to develop plans to go to another level of practice, training and play.
“The FBFA can start looking at a number of things,” said association president Scott Willis.
“Taking our pitching and development camps up a notch, with a goal of 200 players, and a vision of introducing the boy’s game into a middle school program are some of the things we’re going to look at doing for our players and association.” Click here to continue reading.
