Fredericton and area fastpitch fans stepped up to the plate so Wayne Brown wouldn’t have to eat his words.
Back in mid-June – almost two months before the Pepsi U19 Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship would unfold at Prospect Street Park, Brown made a bold statement.
“I believe we’re heading toward – and you can quote me on this – the most successful national championship in Softball Canada history,” Brown told me. “That’s what we’re hoping for and that’s what we’re looking at right now.”
Brown was confident enough to add: “I’d like to net $30,000 to $40,000. Whether we can do it or not I don’t know, but in the back of my mind, that’s what I’m shooting for.”
After the story appeared in the paper the next day, people wondered if Brown had gone too far. The gist of those questioning Wayne’s wisdom went something like this: “I know Wayne means well, but that puts an awful lot of pressure on everyone.
