Tom Doucette was one of the men who helped get him there.
Fitting then, the two will go into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame together Saturday during an induction ceremony in Halifax.
“Tom was probably the most influential coach I’ve had the pleasure of playing under,” said Macumber, a 41-year-old Valley resident.
Macumber will be joined by former teammate Todd King, of Halifax, who also played for Doucette. Builders Bill Barron, of St. John’s, NL., and Fredericton’s Bob Stanton will also be inducted into the hall.
Macumber, Doucette and King represented Nova Scotia at the 1989 Canada Games and were fixtures with the Halifax Junior Blues for the next several seasons.
“It’s really special to be going in with those two,” Macumber said.
The native of Newport goes into the hall with an impressive resume that includes an ISC senior men’s world championship in 2010 with the Jarvis Travellers. After finally winning the event on his 17th try, the first baseman and pitcher decided to hang up his cleats.
“It was such a hard tournament to win,” Macumber said. “I’ve been there with heavily favoured teams and never came close so it was a tough one to win.”
Macumber, who started playing at age five, also won gold at the Pan American Games in 2003. He helped the St. Thomas Storm to a Canadian senior men’s championship in 2006 and won a national junior title with the Lloydminster Liners in 1991. He was a three-time all-world and four time all-Canadian player.
“I had the passion to play when I was really young and I just wanted to be the best player I could possibly be,” Macumber said. Click to continue reading.
