Thanks to Dave Blackburn for this recap
On Sunday May 20th, Maccabi USA fatspitch team won its 2nd SCIFL Weekend Tournament of the season by knocking off Balboa Fastpitch by a 7-4 score in the Final game. After going 0-3 on Saturday Maccabi USA drew the strong Whittier Panteras ball club on Sunday’s game #1, and beat a very good Pitcher in Las Vegas’s Ryan Webb. Maccabi USA pitcher Dan “Winnie” Winnick then took care of the Palm Springs Express team in Sunday’s game #2. Next up was J&B Fatpitch who had beaten Maccabi USA on Saturday behind the pitching of Veteran Mark Bennett from Santa Barbara. This one was no contest as Maccabi USA jumped out on Bennett early and then continued to pour it on. Then they went on to face veteran Sonny Perkins of Arizona in relief of Bennett. That game against J&B was a 7-0 “mercy” rule finish. It was Jason Gluckman’s second pitching victory of the day, and it was a real gem of an outing. Maccabi USA then faced Balboa Fastpitch in the Final game. Maccabi USA jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Balboa starter “Papa” Joe Salcedo, then fell behind 4-3. After Maccabi USA bats chased “Papa” Joe from the circle, Jim Flanagan relieved Salcedo. When Debbie Day relieved Flanagan, Maccabi was ahead my a 7-3 score. That was how things ended. Jason Gluckman pitched great, and shut the door to earn his 3rd pitching win of the day, and in the process, Maccabi USA had scored its 2nd SCIFL Championship in the 2012 season. Terrific effort by all to shake off Saturday 3 losses and run the table for a perfect 4-0 record on Sunday.

Editor’s additional notes:
Balboa reached the finals with wins over Black Curtain, San Diego Primetime and the Colton Dirt Bags. Debbie Day picked up the win over Black Curtain, “Papa Joe” Salcedo over San Diego Prime Time and Debbie Day notching another over Colton. The San Diego contest was a see-saw battle, with San Diego rallying to tie the game late, then taking a one run lead in the international tie breaker, only to have CJ Sales win it for Balboa with a two-run walk off bomb that cleared the left field fence and the right field fence on the adjoining field. Balboa’s Chris Paiva came up big in the Colton game, with the game winning RBI in a hard fought close battle. Balboa adds their runner-up finish Sunday to a Las Vegas Tournament championship trophy won earlier, under skipper Cecilio Smalling.
