Elmira (Ont.) Erb Electric Expos 4, Lanceros de Vargas (Venezuela) 1: Casey Halstead struck out 10 and allowed two hits and one run in seven innings to lead the Expos the the victory. Leadoff batter Josh Brohman hit a home run, triple and had two RBIs and Tim Freeman tallied two hits and an RBI for the Expos. Mike Hoon and Carlos Wood had back-to-back doubles to account for Lanceros de Vargas’ scoring.
Ashland Stock Pack 3, Kitchener (Ont.) Cubs 1:
Adam Binkley hit a solo homer in the second inning and Trevor Urban added a two-run homer in the sixth inning as the Stock Pack won its tournament opener. Tyron McKinney struck out nine batters in seven innings, allowing three hits and walking three to earn the win.
Ryan French was dealt the loss, despite striking out eight batters in six innings for Kitchener. Travis Hofstetter hit a solo homer for the lone Cubs run.
Fargo (N.D.) Kegel Black Knights 6, Harriston (Ont.) Wellington Sox 2:
Roman Foore had two hits and three RBIs and Travis DeJong hit a solo homer as the Black Knights scored five times in the first three innings. Gerald Muizelaar pitched the first four innings, striking out seven and Regan Manley struck out six in three innings or relief for Kegel. Aaron Small had three hits, Trevor Seip hit a homer and Nick Goetz struck out nine batters in six innings for Wellington.
Eugene (Ore.) California A’s 4, Alvinston (Ont.) Indians 2:
Kevin Schellenberg’s home run broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. Matt Palazzo added two hits and an RBI and Sean Whitten struck out nine in four shutout innings for the A’s. Kyle Mitchell was 3-for-3 with a homer run and Chris Drew and Brad Young each tallied two hits for Alvinston.
Toronto (Ont.) Gators 1, Denmark (Wis.) Circle Tap Dukes 0:
Daryn Miller worked a bases-loaded walk to bring home Tyler Whynot in the fifth inning to give the Gators the win. Justin Schofield pitched the first 4 1-3 innings for Toronto, striking out seven and scattering three hits. Greg Garrity struck out five in 2 2-3 innings of relief for the Gators. Jeremy Manley struck out nine in six innings for Denmark.
Harrisburg Pennsylvania Power 6, Niagara (Ont.) Snappers 2:
Frank DeGroat and Karl Gollan each tallied three hits as the Power put up 16 hits in the win. Doug Lohman, Derrick Zechman and Thomas Enoka each added two hits each for Harrisburg. Lucas Mata earned the victory, firing 15 strikeouts in seven innings. Adam Dearborn had a two-run homer for the Snappers.
Sooke (B.C.) Loggers 4, Davenport (Iowa) Quad City Sox 3:
Chad Bryden, Kyle Cowick and Richard Haldane each homered for the Loggers. Quad City’s Kyle Chapman hit a three-run homer run in the fifth inning, but Haldane’s homer in the seventh was the difference. Haldane also earned the win on the mound, striking out seven in seven innings.
Vancouver (Wash.) Columbia Rockers A-1 Brewers 1, Muscoutah (Ill.) Pete’s Blues 0:
Jeff Farion struck out 13 batters in seven innings, hurling a two-hit shutout for the Brewers. Tony Gonzalez scored the lone run in the game on an RBI single by Tim Hunt. Sisco Sabate struck out six in seven innings, scattering five hits for the Pete’s Blues.
Saskatoon Diamondbacks 2, Elmira (Ont.) Erb Electric Expos 0:
Derek Arsenie and Keitch Mackintosh each had RBIs for the Diamondbacks, which plated both runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Trevor Ethier struck out 10 batters in seven innings for the three-hit shutout for Saskatoon. Dan Martin took the loss for the Expos, despite striking out eight batters and allowing just one earned run in six innings.
West St. Paul (Minn.) Angels 3, Waterdown (Ont.) Hammer 2:
Juan Potoliccio struck out 15 batters in seven innings to help lead the Angels to the win. The Angels scored all three runs in the top of the sixth with RBIs coming from Tommy Crouch and Leonardo Latasa.
Dominic Demasi had two of the four Hammer hits and also drove in a run. Tim Neill had eight strikeouts in seven innings, allowing three runs, seven hits and one walk in the loss for the Hammer.
