The Kansas City Indios returned to Kelsch Field to win the North American Fastpitch Association Men’s Wood Bat World Series on Sept. 2.
The Indios, winners of the Newton Mexican-American Men’s Fast Pitch Championships earlier this year, went 4-0 in the tournament. In pool play, the Indios downed the Wizards of Oz 6-3 and the Rocky Mountain Rebels 7-6. In the quarterfinals, the Indios downed the Rebels 7-2. In the semifinals, the Indios downed the Hutchinson Angels 2-0. In the championship game, the Indios downed the Wizards 9-5, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break 4-4 tie.
Jaime Garcia threw a two-hit shutout in the semifinals, striking out nine. Rico Garcia posted three hits. Adan Garcia had two hits. Jaime Garcia pitched for the win in the finals, striking out nine. Albert Garcia had three hits, Rico Garcia, Adan Garcia, Art Garcia III and Jordan Garcia each had two hits.
The Indios took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Wizards tied the game in the top of the third. The Indios added a run in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth, but the Wizards came back with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie it back up. After the Indios regained the lead in the sixth, the Wizards added one more run in the seventh.
Norm Hancock, Jason Pennington, Darren Young and Jeff Tarwater each had two hits for the Wizards in the finals. Young took the loss pitching.
