California squad to # 2 ranked New York Gremlins Wednesday on ISC Network
On Monday, the A’s again went with the hard throwing righthander Tony Mancha. Mancha tossed a complete game shutout, 5-0, scattering 5 hits, while striking out 11 and walking 2. Mancha has pitched all 12 innings to date, is 2-0 and yet to surrender a run in the tournament.
Offensively, the A’s chased New York’s Devin McCullough early. McCullough had struck out 23 in the Swashbuckler’s opening round 1-0 win. The A’s scored two in the first, another in the third and two more in the fifth to seal the win. Harrison Peters came on in relief of McCullough in the third, with McCullough suffering the loss. The New York pitchers walked only three in the game but all three came home to score, as is oft the case.
California once again got good production from the heart of their batting order. Derek Mayson stayed red hot, going 3-for-3 and scoring a run.Mayson is now 5-for-5 in the tournament. Josh Johnson was 2-for-3, driving in 3 runs.
In the first, Josh Johnson doubled home two, following a Kevin Castillo walk and Derek Mayson double.
The third inning was a virtual repeat of the first. Castillo walked, Mayson singled and Josh Johnson drove home his third run of the game with a single.
The A’s added the final two runs in the fifth when Kevin Castillo singled home Jenner Christiansen who had walked. Marcus Tan then scored from third on a passed ball.
