CLEARWATER — Over more than 60 years of play, the Clearwater Bombers men’s fast-pitch softball team left its mark on the city.
Ten national titles, 22 players elected to the sport’s hall of fame, and numerous individual and team records are all testament to the success the Bombers enjoyed throughout the team’s existence from 1938–2000.
Today, the Clearwater Bombers’ Legacy Educational Project, an organization made up primarily of former players, is determined to ensure the team’s contributions to the community are never forgotten.
The nonprofit group recently hosted a golf tournament at Clearwater Country Club to raise money for a museum that will honor the team’s accomplishments and preserve its storied history.
“The Bombers were known all over the world as the top men’s fast-pitch softball team in the world,” Legacy Project president and former Bombers player Wayne Dees said. “But we’re to the point now where if we don’t do something to preserve its legacy, they’re going to be forgotten.
