It was the 50th, and possibly last Colfax Fastpitch classic.
The Eagles from Roseville, CA came up with timely hits all weekend long to capture their 2nd straight, and 3rd in 4 years. In the first game of the day on Saturday’s pool play, the Eagles came out on top of the 2-1 decision over the East Bay Bashers from Hayward. With Eddie Gaspar and Sam Villalvazo dueling it out on the mound, a 1st inning 2-run homerun by Aaron Glaum proved the difference. Gaspar gave up 1 run in the 1st inning, and held strong the remainder of the way to pick up the win. Villalvazo gave up only 2 hits in the loss.
The Eagles would then go on to beat the KW Pirates in the 2nd round robin game of the day 4-3. Gaspar again picked up the win in the circle to move to 2-0 on the weekend. The play of the game came on a strikeout that squirted away from Mario Pereira. Pereira would pick up the loose ball and fire to first where Russ Newnan scooped it out of the dirt to preserve the win and strand 2 guys in scoring position.
The Eagles would earn the #2 seed heading into Sunday’s single elimination bracket. Again, the Eagles would have to get past Villalvazo and the Bashers Sunday morning, with Nate Dondero toeing the rubber for the Eagles this time. The Eagles struck first in the 3rd inning with a leadoff double in the gap by Kevin Fontana. A sac fly from Nick Freitas, and RBI groundout from Jabari Wimbs would put the Eagles up 1-0. Dondero had everything working as he went through the Bashers order only giving up 2 hits. The Eagles added a pair of runs off a Russ Newnan 2 run homerun to plate the final 2 runs of the game. Villalvazo would give up 3 hits in the game, as Pereira collected a single.
In the championship game, the Eagles would have to beat the Pirates and Brandon Shearer again. Wimbs lead off the game with a triple to the gap, followed by a Glaum double to make it 1-0. The next batter, Pereira sent a line drive to center field and cleared the fence to make it 3-0. The Eagles added another run in the 1st and lead 4-0. Wimbs would later hit a ball deep over the right field fence, as the Eagles would end up on the right side of a 7-0 final after 5 innings. Gaspar collected his 3rd win of the weekend earning MVP Pitcher honors, while Glaum collected the MVP Player award.
The Eagles will be in action in the ASA C Nationals in 2 weeks in Salem, OR to wrap up their year.
