PARANA, Argentina –– The USA Softball Men’s National Team (MNT) opened its 2022 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Men’s Pan American Championship campaign last night against No. 2 Argentina, falling behind 2-0 through three innings of play before inclement weather forced a postponement. The contest will be continued at a later day/time prior to the conclusion of Opening Round.
Entering the tournament in the No. 3 spot, Team USA came out hot in Day Two of the Pan American Championship with a six inning 14-7 run-rule victory over No. 7 Colombia. The U.S. collected 12 hits in the win with five U.S. batters recording a multi-hit game in addition to a long ball from Tyler Bouley (Champlin, Minn.). Brad Kilpatrick (Sydney, Australia) earned the win in the circle for Team USA, tallying ten strikeouts and limiting the Colombia offense to five hits.
Cam Schiller (Prescott, Ariz.) drove in the first run for the U.S. after sending a sac-fly to right field to score Nick Mullins (Toms River, N.J.) who led off the bottom of the first with a walk. Another walk to Erick Ochoa (Imperial, Calif.) followed by a single from Jonathan Lynch (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) would look to continue the early rally, but a strikeout would end the inning. The Colombia offense responded quickly in the top of the second after a two-out double to center field and a fielding miscue by the U.S. defense would allow a run to score, but a strikeout from Kilpatrick would send Team USA back to the plate with the score even, 1-1.
The U.S. offense lit a spark in the bottom of the third after a single through the left side from Blaine Milheim (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) and a hit-by-pitch from Schiller put runners on for Ochoa who ripped a line drive to right field to put the U.S. back on top, 3-1. Lynch continued the rally for the Eagles with a single up the middle, followed by a big swing from Bouley that sent a ball out of the park to extend Team USA’s lead, 6-1.
Kilpatrick and the U.S. defense kept the Colombia offense quiet in the top of the fourth after a strikeout and a pair of ground outs sent Team USA back to the plate for the bottom of the frame. A leadoff single from Mullins followed by a walk to Milheim would set the stage for Schiller who drove a ball to left field to score two, before a single from Ochoa tacked on another run to put the U.S. on top, 9-1.
Cody Gibbons (St. Paul, Minn.) entered the circle for the U.S. in the top of the fifth and quickly retired the first batter he faced with a strikeout, but a hit-by-pitch followed by a double from the Colombia offense would allow a run to score. Another walk followed by a single and a hit-by-pitch would cut the U.S. lead, 9-4, before Kilpatrick took back over pitching duties with one out. Despite the pitching change, the Colombia offense continued to rally, stringing together a pair of base hits to tack on three more before Kilpatrick fired back with a strikeout to end the at-bat.
Team USA answered back in the bottom of the frame after back-to-back singles from Mullins and Milheim put runners on first and second with no outs. Three-straight walks would push two U.S. runs across before a passed ball allowed Ochoa to speed home to extend the U.S. lead, 12-7.
The Red, White and Blue offense pulled away for good in the bottom of the sixth as a pair of hit-by-pitches and back-to-back singles from Milheim and Schiller allowed two U.S. runs to score, forcing the 14-7 (six-innings) run-rule victory.
Milheim led the U.S. offense with three hits in the win followed by Ochoa, Mullins, Schiller and Lynch who each tallied two hits apiece. Leading the Red, White and Blue in RBI was Schiller with four, followed by Bouley and Mullins who each collected three.
Team USA returns to action tomorrow, April 26 with a 9 a.m. ART contest against No. 10 Puerto Rico. Live stats and streaming with be available through USASoftball.com.
Opening Round will conclude on Wednesday, April 27 with the top three finishers from each group advancing to the Playoff Round. The final two countries at the top of the leader board will then go head-to-head in the Men’s Pan American Championship Final on Saturday, April 30.
