LOS ANGELES — USA Softball Women’s Futures National Team member Megan Langenfeld, the UCLA standout who helped lead the Bruins to the NCAA softball title, will receive the prestigious 2010 Sportswoman of the Year award during the sixth annual LA Sports Awards, which will be held on Thursday, February 24 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Previous winners of the L.A. Sports Council Sportswoman of the Year award are Allyson Felix, track and field, (2009 and 2007); Candace Parker, L.A. Sparks (2008); Lisa Leslie, L.A. Sparks (2006); and Misty May/Kerri Walsh, beach volleyball (2005).
The LA Sports Awards are presented annually by the Los Angeles Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. The Sportswoman award is given to the local female athlete whose performance and character best exemplified the ideals of sportsmanship during the calendar year.
The pitcher/first baseman posted UCLA single-season records in slugging percentage (1.085) and on base percentage (.667), while producing the second best, single-season batting average (.527). She also paced the Bruins with a 14-1 pitching record and a 1.53 earned run average.
During the Women’s College World Series at the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla., Langenfeld hit .706 with four home runs and nine runs batted in. Three of her homers came during the WCWS finals against Arizona. She was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Langenfeld, a Top 3 Finalist for the 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award and a USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week (April 19-25, 2010), is three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection. She scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2011 with a degree in economics.
Lagenfeld represented the United States in three competitions in 2010 including the KFC World Cup of Softball, where she played with the USA Futures team. She led the team at the Japan Cup in Sendai City, Japan, hitting .417 going 5-for-12.
With bases loaded in the sixth inning of the Japan Cup Championship Game, Langenfeld came through at the plate with a triple that would plate three runs. She also earned the win, working a complete game with four strikeouts and no runs allowed.
The awards show will be televised on FSN Prime Ticket (initial airing will be on Feb. 25) and will include special appearances by many of the athletes and coaches whose achievements helped make 2010 such a memorable year in sports.
In addition to the Sportswoman award, the ceremony also will feature a countdown of the Top 10 moments for 2010 as selected by a blue-ribbon media panel, along with the naming of the Sportsman, Coach, and Sports Executive of the Year.
