White Sox keep that winning feeling
Wednesday July 7th
A seven innings thriller has seen the New Zealand womenýs softball team
continue their winning run today at the international Canada Cup tournament
with a 2-1 victory over Triple Crown Force.
The White Sox were never behind in the game but coach Mike Walsh must have
been doing some nail biting as a late rally from the American club side
Triple Crown Force saw the scores narrowed to 2-1 after the New Zealand
team had held a 2-0 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Pitcher Ali Arnold was the star for the White Sox, in the final inning
after giving up a home run to the lead off hitter for Triple Crown Force
she then struck out the next three batters to win the game.
Arnold was dominant on the mound refusing to give the American hitters a
chance, she pitched all seven innings facing 25 batters and taking 10
strikeouts while giving up three hits, one walk and one run.
The White Sox were the first to score in the game in the top of the fourth
inning with pinch runner Amanda Preston coming home on a single from Togi
Lote. Preston was running for Upu Lote who got the ball rolling in the
inning with a one base hit.
Togi Lote was again in action in the top of the seventh when as the lead
off hitter she picked up a double before being replaced by runner Karlene
Louden. A sacrifice fly to centre field by Talilotu Tonuýu saw Louden score
to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead.
An automatic home run by Triple Crown Forceýs lead off hitter Alyson Carter
in the bottom of the seventh caused a few nervous moments for the Kiwis but
strong pitching from Ali Arnold saw the next three batters taken out for
the White Sox to win the game.
Todaýs win puts the Kiwis into third spot in their section and that is
where they have to stay if they are to qualify for the eight team
championship playoffs this weekend.
The tournament continues tomorrow in Surrey, British Columbia with the
White Sox taking the number one team in their section USA Schutt Elite at
4.30pm (NZT).
