White Sox take a hit at Canada Cup

Thursday July 8th

The winning run of the New Zealand women's softball team at the 
international Canada Cup tournament has been brought to a halt today with 
an 8-1 loss against the USA Schutt Elite team.

The American side were in control of the game from the outset with one run 
in the first inning, five in the second and runs again in the third and 
fourth innings. The White Sox pulled one run back in the top of the third 
inning but it was never going to be enough.

Kiri Shaw was the run scorer for the Kiwis as she came home on a single 
from Char Pouaka after originally getting on base with a one base hit. The 
game finished in five innings with the mercy rule invoked.

Ali Arnold started the game on the mound for the White Sox, she faced 10 
batters taking one strikeout and giving up three hits, five runs and one 
walk. Arnold was replaced on the mound in the second inning by Cynthia 
Fallowfield who faced 15 batters taking two strikeouts and giving up five 
hits, three runs and one walk.

Going into the Canada Cup tournament in Surrey, British Columbia the White 
Sox were targeting a top four finish in their section to qualify them for 
the eight team championship playoffs over the weekend. If the Kiwis are to 
achieve that goal they will need to defeat Canada tomorrow in their final 
game of pool play at 2.30pm (NZT). Going into the match both teams have 
recorded three wins so who ever comes out on top tomorrow is likely to take 
the final qualifying spot in the section.
