Pouaka home run puts White Sox into playoffs

Friday July 9th

A third inning home run from Canterbury's Char Pouaka today has powered the 
New Zealand women's softball team into the championship playoffs at the 
international Canada Cup tournament.

Taking on the Canadian Olympic team in Surrey, British Columbia the White 
Sox have come out on top 2-0 with the Pouaka home run proving the 
difference. Going into the game both teams new victory would see them 
through to the top eight playoffs while a loss would see them out of the 
competition.

Under the pressure of the winner take all match Pouaka proved to be the 
star as her home run also scored Kalala Faalogo who had led the inning off 
with a one base hit.

White Sox pitcher Ali Arnold was the glue that held the team together again 
as she dominated on the mound pitching all seven innings. Arnold faced 26 
batters giving up five hits and one walk and taking six strikeouts.

Canada had their chances in the game as they consistently got runners on 
base but they couldn't convert those chances into runs. The fielding from 
the White Sox was very tight  with no errors in the game.

The White Sox qualify fourth in their section and will go through to the 
top eight championship playoffs where they will take on the number one team 
from the other section Australia at 9am (NZT) tomorrow.

The Australians are unbeaten in the tournament but the White Sox will be no 
easy beats as the traditional Trans Tasman rivalry is bound to come to the 
fore.
