Nfld holds off Quebec for narrow win

ALBERTON - Newfoundland and Labrador's Canada Games team jumped out to a 
6-0 lead before holding on for a tight 6-5 victory over Team Quebec Monday 
at Memorial Park in Alberton during round robin play at the 2004 
Consolidated Credit Union Canadian Midget Boys Fast Pitch Championship.

Newfound scored a run in the second, two in the third and three in the 
fourth. Quebec rasllied with a late charge scoring two of their own in the 
fifth and adding three more in the sixth but came up short when Jonathan 
Kane was re-entered to pitch.

For Newfoundland, Justin Gill (2-3, run scored, two doubles), Brad Ezekiel 
(2-3, double, RBI), Sheldon Keough (1-2, run scored, RBI) and Jonathan Kane 
(1-1, run scored, RBI) contributed offensively.

Quebec's late rally was led by Dave Nadeau (3-3, two runs scored, two RBI, 
double), Etienne Patry (2-3, two RBI, stolen base), Maxim Breton (2-3, two 
runs scored, double) and Mathie Lessard (2-4, run scored).

Winning pitcher Kane went 5.3 innings, shutting Quebec out, allowing six 
hits walking one and sitting down two. Coady Kelly pitched 1.7 innings of 
seven hit ball, allowing five runs, and striking out two.

Losing pitcher Pierre-Hughes Lavallee went three innings, allowing five 
runs on six hits, walking one and fanning two. Mathieu Alain pitched three 
innings relief, allowing one run on one hit, walking four and striking out 
three.



IN FINAL GAME OF DAY,

At Queen Elizabeth Park's Very Important Volunteer Field, the Lancers 
handed the Nanaimo Cardinals (B.C.) a 4-1 setback.

Then on Monday evening in Alberton, Jeff Leskow threw five innings of 
no-hit, shutout ball as the Lancers showed their dominance, with a 7-0 
five-inning thumping of the Newfoundland Canada Games team before about 200 
fans, the majority of who were pro-Alberta.

Leading the Lancers sticks were Shayne Cusak (3-4, run scored, RBI), Matt 
Tomlinson (2-3, two runs scored, stolen base), Mike McVey (1-1, two RBI) 
and Derek Gervais (1-2, run scored, RBI).

Jeff Leskow pitched five innings of no-hit, shutpout ball allowing just two 
runners ( a walk and hit batter) while striking out seven.
