Langley k's 15, but Hitmen lose
ST. CROIX, N.S. - The Kinkora Hitmen spoiled a 15-strikeout night by
pitcher Steve Langley, losing 2-1 to the Brookfield Elks in extra innings
to fall to 1-4 here Wednesday night at the Canadian Senior Men's Fast Pitch
Championship.
Langley, of Trenton, N.S., went 7.3 innings, allowing one earned run (the
winning run was scored on an error) and walked one to record the loss.
The Hitmen now face the dubious task of winning their final two games to
even come close to securing a spot in the playoff round and will need some
help even to do that. They face the Saskatoon Black Sox (4-0) heading into
Wednesday action at 1 p.m. before facing the host Halifax Murphy's Fish and
Chips Keith's (2-2) at 4:30 p.m. in a game rescheduled from Tuesday due to
heavy rains.
Against the Elks, Kinkora got out to a 1-0 first inning lead when
Alberton's Jeff Ellsworth (1-3, run scored) scored from third base on a
throwing error. Other top batters for the Pat McIver-coached Hitmen were
Wade Smith (2-4) and Steve Langley (1-3).
Mike Miller (1-3, two runs scored) and Ryan Flynn (1-3, two RBI) were the
only hitters for Brookfield to get a read on Langley, but an error by Craig
Manuel cost the Hitmen the winning run.
Winning pitcher Pat Slaunwhite went eight innings allowing one run, five
hits, walked two and struck out nine.
