Softball Canada selects Assistant Coach for Junior Mens National Team
(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Doug Neil from
Wingham, ON has been selected as the Pitching Coach with Canadas Junior
Mens National Team. Neil will work with Head Coach Kelly McGiffin
(Okanagan Falls, B.C.) and Assistant Coach Tom Doucette (Musquodoboit,
NS). He will use his expertise to help select and prepare Canadas best
junior men fast pitch players in Canada for the 2005 Junior Mens ISF World
Softball Championships which will be held next summer in Summerside, PEI
from June 22 July 1, 2005.
"I am extremely grateful for having the chance to be involved with the
Canadian Junior Men's Softball Team," stated Doug Neil. "I am looking
forward to working with the coaching staff and athletes as we prepare for
the 2005 World Championships." I believe strongly that pitchers are
developed with hours and hours of hard work and good drills and I am
thrilled with the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with our
young players, added Neil.
"We are pleased to have someone of Doug's calibre join our Junior Men's
Coaching Staff, stated Head Coach of the Mens National Team Program, Mark
Smith. His successes and experience in working with athletes in the
junior age group is a definite asset to our program."
Dougs softball background includes playing, coaching and instructing. He
played softball in Waterloo for many years and has conducted pitching
clinics in both Canada and the US. He has also produced two pitching
videos. He has coached players from mite age to intermediate in Wingham,
Ontario. Doug has been involved with Team Ontarios boys team with the
Canada Summer Games since 1991 - he was the Pitching Coach at the 1993
games in Kamloops, B.C.; Assistant Coach at the 1997 games in Brandon, MB
(Gold Medal) and the Head Coach for the 2001 games in London, ON (Gold Medal).
The Junior Mens ISF World Championships take place every 4 years. Canada
has had success on the world stage with the following rankings:
2001 (Sydney, AUS) Bronze
1997 (St. Johns, NFLD) Bronze
1993 (Auckland, NZ) Gold
1989 (Summerside, PEI) Silver
1985 (Fargo, North Dakota) Bronze
1981 (Edmonton, AB) 4th
Canada will assemble teams from across the World during the ISF World
Championships in Summerside, PEI. Softball Canada will be announcing the
athletes who have accepted invitations to next springs junior men's
national team selection camp in the following weeks.
Softball Canada is the national sport governing body for the sport of fast
pitch, slo-pitch and orthodox softball in Canada.
