Mississauga Fastball League
Mississauga, Ontaio

Mississauga Chiefs earned their first Mississauga Fastball League
championship since 1997 with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Mississauga Mudcats
last night to win the best-of-five series in four games.
The Mudcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Ty
Trainor singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Welton.
Scott Patterson then reached base on an error to bring in Dave Grundy before
Chiefs pitcher Drew Hathway was able to shut down the Mudcats and strand two
baserunners.
Blair Setford got the Chiefs rolling in the bottom of the second with a
one-out solo home run. A bunt single by Hathway led to the tying run in the
bottom of the third inning as he scored on a single by Adam LeBrun.
In the Chiefs' fourth inning, Dwayne Schrader singled and came around to
score on a single by Tom Fortune. Tim Coe brought another run home, working
Mudcats' pitcher Chris McColl for a based loaded walk to put the Chiefs up
4-2.
The Mudcats replied in the fifth as Ron Rosengren reached on an error and
scored on a single by McColl. However, the Chiefs got that one back in the
bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases on a double by Andrew Hill and
two walks, with Hill scoring on a passed ball.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Mudcats refused to go quietly as
McColl blasted a one-out triple. Trainor singled to score McColl and, as the
tying run, advanced to second after a strikeout and an infield single by
Grundy before Hathway coaxed an infield pop-up for the final out.
Hathway went the distance for the Chiefs, scattering seven hits while
striking out seven and issuing three walks. McColl took the loss, allowing
10 hits and six walks to go along with six strikeouts.
As the 25th and, possibly, final season of the MFL came to a close, the
regular season and post-season awards were announced on the field following
the game.
Drew Hathway was named the MFL Playoff MVP, with a 2-1 record in the final.
He allowed six runs, only three of them earned. Hathway also had a home run in
game three, and a game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the seventh in game
two.
The Chiefs Andrew Hill and Mudcats' Mike Oliver split the regular season
Most Valuable Player award while a pair of lefties, Chris McColl of the
Mudcats and Adam LeBrun of the Chiefs were jointly presented the Most
Valuable Pitcher award.
Chris McColl was named the recipient of the Hazel McCallion Sportsmanship
and Dedication Award in recognition of his stellar MFL career. Over the
years, Chris has won both the Playoff MVP and Most Valuable Pitcher award
and has been the mainstay of the Mudcats pitching staff since the early
1990s.
On behalf of the MFL, I want to thank umpires Peter Kluszczynski and Garry
Kipfer and their crew who officiated our games this year for their
dedication to the league. Thanks also to the Mississauga News for coverage
throughout the year, to Al Doran for continuing internet exposure and to the
players of both the Chiefs and the Mudcats, particularly team reps Tom
Fortune and Rob Sampano respectively, for their commitment to the great game
of fastball.
