The Fulcrum
Continuing the trend set last year, the Gee-Gees womens fastpitch team
has got off to a great start this season. Playing in the Ontario Womens
Intercollegiate Fastpitch Association (OIWFA), the 2004 team is faring
well-through two weekends of play, the women have won six games. After
winning the Ontario Championship in 2003, the team is hoping to follow up
with a repeat of the same feat this year.
The coaching staff includes Brian Robertson, Scott Searle, Genevieve
Walkden, and Gil Read. Read was the team leader of the Canadian womens
fastpitch team that competed in Athens. The other coaches are all returning
members of the staff that lef the team to last years championship.
Along with a solid returning core of players from last year are eight new
faces. Players to watch include Lindsey Hutton and Sarah Thompson, a
pitcher-catcher duo that has performed well this season. Another pair of
battery mates, Erica Chan and Jennifer Blakely return this year to continue
their domination of batters across the province. Nicole Dunlop and Danna
Masters, who play middle infield and outfield, respectively, lead the team
in most offensive categories.
"The core of (Last years team) has mixed well with the new group," said
Searle. "There is good team chemistry. We have a lot of strong players."
By virtue of winning the championship last season, the Gee Gees will host
the season-ending tournament. Searle hopes fans of the team will make the
trip to the field to watch what Searle feels is high-quality university
fastpitch. The womens fastpitch team plays the Ontario Championship at the
R.A. Centre (2451 Riverside Dr.) on the weekend of Oct. 22. The tournament
schedule will be announced at a later date.
