Argentina makes five for Pacific Cup series
Friday October 15th
There will be a Latin feel to the Pacific International men's softball
series in Rotorua early next year after Argentina accepted an invitation to
attend the tournament.
The world champion New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox are seeded number
one for the event and will be fighting it out for the title along with
Australia, Samoa, Japan and Argentina.
New Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase says his side will be in for a tough
workout against four of the best sides in the world outside Canada and America.
"Argentina were very competitive in Christchurch at the world
championships, they have a world class pitcher and catcher combination and
they will provide stiff competition for us. It is going to be a very tough
series but we wouldn't want it any other way," said Kohlhase.
The first pitch of the inaugural Pacific Cup series is on Thursday February
3rd and the tournament runs through to Sunday February 6th. All teams will
play each other twice before the top three playoff on the final day.
With each team to play eight games in the first three days sides will be
required to play up to three games a day on occasions. Kohlhase says such a
busy schedule will be a real workout for his team.
"Three games a day at any international competition is extremely hard but
it also gives us a good gauge of where we are at in terms of development."
Given the record of the Black Sox Kohlhase says he knows all the teams will
be gunning for them but he will also be looking at development in the
series and introducing new players to the squad and the Black Sox environment.
"Being current world champions teams will be looking to knock us off. There
is a winning way with the Black Sox and players that will be brought into
the squad who will be new to the environment but they will be exposed to
that winning culture and it is important to maintain it."
Kohlhase says he will be looking to name a train on squad shortly before
selecting the team for the Pacific Cup series in early January following
the men's National Provincial Championships.
