Wairarapa the Giant killers at Doreen Dalton tournament
Saturday October 23rd
Giants from Wairarapa have proved to be the big winners on day one of the
Doreen Dalton premier one men's softball tournament at Fraser Park, Lower
Hutt today.
In a big upset Giants defeated Northcote 3-2 with the Wairarapa side
winning the game in the first tie breaker inning with Terry Waitere and
Jonathon Munden both scoring. Northcote replied with one run in the eighth
but it wasn't enough.
Giants pitcher Justin Karaitiana was the star for the underdogs, he faced
29 batters giving up just six hits and taking one strikeout. Karaitiana was
also strong with the bat with a big automatic home run over the right field
fence in the bottom of the fourth inning to start the scoring for Giants.
Along with the win over Northcote, Giants also had a convincing 10-0
victory over Hutt Valley Dodgers making them the only unbeaten team in
section two.
Also unbeaten after day one is Mt Albert Ramblers from section one who
started the day with a close 7-6 win over Porirua, the game went to two tie
breaker innings before Ramblers claimed the win. They followed that up with
a more convincing 4-1 win over defending champions Hutt Valley Cardinals.
While Northcote were upset by Wairarapa Giants they showed some real
strength to fight straight back and defeat national club champions Poneke
Kilbirnie.
The clash between Northcote and PK was nail bitter stuff with pitchers from
both sides proving dominant on the mound. Northcote pitcher Heinnie Shannon
proved too hot to handle for the PK batters giving up just two hits in the
game. PK's hurler Shaun Foster was just as dominant giving up just a couple
of hits as well.
The only run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning when
Northcote's Brad Rona came home on a hit from Takaki Sato.
There was plenty of tight softball today with the ten teams split into two
sections for round robin play before the top four sides playoff for the
title on Monday.
Round robin play will conclude tomorrow and with eight teams still in
contention for the final four every game will be crucial. While Mt Albert
Ramblers and Wairarapa Giants have the luxury of going into tomorrow
unbeaten, sides such as Poneke Kilbirnie, Miramar, Hutt Valley Cardinals,
Northcote and Porirua all need two wins tomorrow if they are to stand any
chance to qualifying for the playoffs.
Results:
Miramar 11 Nelson 0, Ramblers 7 Porirua 6 (tie breaker), Ramblers 4
Cardinals 1, Porirua 7 Nelson 2, Wairarapa Giants 10 Hutt Valley Dodgers 0,
Poneke Kilbirnie 7 Hutt City United 1, Cardinals 1 Miramar 0, Wairarapa
Giants 3 Northcote 2 (tie breaker), Northcote 1 Poneke Kilbirnie 0, Hutt
City United 9 Hutt Valley Dodgers 0.
