ROYALS CLAIM SILVER AT ISC 19U CHAMPIONSHIPS
by Robin Wark of Sooke (B. C.) News Mirror

The International Softball Congress U19 North American Championships was
quite an experience for the Sooke Royals Midget A fast-ball team.

The event was held in Fargo, N.D. at the same time as the ISC Worlds and ISC
II tournaments. "We could play and then go and watch the best in the world
play". Said Royals centre-fielder Steve Reicheld.

The Royals proved they belonged with the best on the continent en route to a
second-place finish. In the championship game Saturday, Sooke fell to
Napanee of Ontario 12-2. Sooke compiled a 2-2 record in the tournament with
both losses being to Napanee. Ryan Chamberland, Kerry Ross and Shawn Koster
all earned spots on the all-tournament team with their play. "I was pleased
with their effort," head coach Rod Nyberg said of his squad. "They gave it
their best the whole time".

The tournament marked the end of a six-month long season for the Royals. The
squad earned its spot in the ISC tourney by winning a qualifier event in
Victoria earlier this year. The Royals also had success in the Macdonald
Park men=s league. They won the "B" playoff title. "It is definitely a great
team to play on". Reichheld said.
With only one player aging out, the Royals are looking forward to having
their core back together net season.
In the gold medal game, Sooke scored two runs on three hits. Jared Cooper,
Ross and Jesse Waddell each knocked out a hit with Ross hitting a home run.
Napanee had seven hits.

Sooke started the tournament by downing Melbourne of Ontario 13-6. The
Royals collected 11 hits, while Koster held the opposition to seven hits and
struck out eight.

Offensively, Chamberland led the way for Sooke with a 3-for-4 performance at
the plate with three runs batted in and a home run. Ross also drove in three
runs as he went 2-for-3 with a home run. Darren Koster drove in three runs.

The Royals blanked Winkler of Manitoba, 7-0, in five innings. Over the years
Sooke has played the Winkler crew a few times and Nyberg said it was nice to
get a victory against the Manitoba team. Koster allowed four hits and fanned
11. Sean Reinders was 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and a trio of RBIs.
Steve Reichheld was 2-for-2 with a walk.

In its first two games, Sooke got off to great starts. The Royals hung up
six runs in first inning of its opener and five in the first frame of second
game.

"We just kind of all got pumped up
.lots of cheering and yelling and
supporting each other" Reichheld said of the Royals' in the first two games.

In their first game against Napanee, Sooke fell 7-0. Ross allowed five runs
on seven hits, while Shawn Vanderkerkhove gave up two runs on three hits.
Cooper and Richard Gray each had a hit for Sooke.

Playing for the Royals in the tournament were Richard Gray, Corey Brown,
Gord Fisher, Jared Cooper, Duncan Gray, Shawn Vandekerkhove, Kerry Ross,
Jesse Waddell, Steve Reichheld, Lars Nyberg, Shawn Koster, Sean Reinders,
Darren Koster and Ryan Chamberland. Dave Reichheld was an assistant coach
and Barry Waddell manned the scorebook.
