Wellingtonion to coach All Stars line up

Wellington club coach Wayne Nichols has been appointed coach of the World 
All Stars team to take on the New Zealand Community Trust White Sox next month.

Nichols will lead the All Stars in the NZ Community Trust Series as they 
take on New Zealand and the Japanese Elite team. The women’s tri series 
will be held at Smokefree Ballpark, Christchurch from January 14th ­ 16th.

Four players from the Australian silver medal winning team at the Athens 
Olympics have been confirmed for the All Stars side, including outstanding 
pitcher Zara Mee.

The balance of the team will be made up of overseas imports playing in New 
Zealand and players on the fringe of selection for the White Sox.

Nichols was coach of the Wellington women’s provincial team in the mid 
1990’s and is currently coaching the Miramar women’s team in the Wellington 
and Intercity club competitions. He says the appointment as All Stars coach 
was an opportunity too good to miss.

“It will be a challenge and in introduction to the women’s game for me at 
an international level,” said Nichols.

The All Stars squad is expected to be announced in the next few weeks and 
will assemble in Christchurch the day before the tri series begins. Nichols 
says it will be hard to bring the team together in just one day and form 
combinations but he is confident the All Stars team will perform well.

“I am expecting most of the players in the All Stars will be experienced 
athletes so they should come together pretty quickly. Most of the players 
would have played international softball and they will give the White Sox 
an opportunity to play some quality opposition especially with the 
Australian players coming,” said Nichols.
